Last Tuesday, we talked about our second essay. It has to be about an image of our own choosing, and has to include rich text, theory, and social context. Until a couple of hours ago, I had no idea what this image was going to be. In a later entry, I shall post up this image...it should make for a lot of writing, eventually.
The bulk of the lecture was over communication, primarily in the culture industry. I already knew about the basics of the sender, message, and receiver. I had no idea just how much each one played a part in the culture industry. For example, the sender could be the political economy, the message sometimes being symtomatic, or the receiver could be market research. Hollywood is apparently very good at this. Hegemony, or the implicit understanding between the ruling class and the proletariat, was also mentioned. If I had to write about a theory discussed today, auteur theory (or authorship) would probably be my pick because I believe authors tend to have their own message they want to portray, whereas the political economy chooses a message everyone would want or should want to hear. Actually, this discussion would lead into our next lecture, which was over music.
