[c-muses] #8 word - lifeline

Follows off of the events documented here

He didn’t sign on for this shit…in fact, he very specifically avoided pledging and said ‘no’ to the whole fucked up mess of it when he came of age and his mother invited him to train.

Humans weren’t his charge, destiny wasn’t his responsibility. He was a civilian, he was free. He was absolutely resolute in his goal of not ending up like his father…in a home, useless, another statistic of a war no one even knew was going on.

Duty, oaths, suicide vows of loyalty and self-destruction had no place in his life or in his actions when he felt her. He was driven to his knees outside a local club by her pain, that fine connection of energy that came from having seen her thoughts before screaming out to him as she fell. The raw and gaping wounds of an injured mind he knew called out to him because he was an avatar.

He answered only because he knew and liked the strong, sweet woman he’d met only a couple of months before. Walking the alleys all night until he found her, he looked because he wanted to.

He wrapped her in his jacket because she was cold. He took her home to Tommy because she was lost, because he wanted to help a friend. His duty was to himself, and himself alone as he sat with her in his living room, holding her hand as she huddled on his sofa and he perched on his coffee table. He listened to Tommy behind him, while he himself held a cell phone to his ear.

“Hi, this message is for Julian Sark? My name is Tommy Karras, I’m a friend of Bee’s. Cain Callahan gave me your number, he said you were the one I should call…”

“ ‘Allo?”

Startled from his thoughts by the voice in his ear, Carbone gave his attention back to his own phone call, watching as Baileigh’s vacant gaze caught that of Mayilia in her baby seat nearby. A soft smile touched her lips, but no recognition.

Still…maybe there was hope.

“Hey, Mom, it’s me. Listen, can you come by my place? It’s Baileigh Solis, Hank Callahan’s friend? Someone’s ripped into her mind, and I can’t make heads or tails of it…”

“Say no more, baby…I gonna come over in a few minutes, you just make her comfortable, understand?”

“Yeah, Mom…and thanks.”

“Of course, sweetie…s'agapo.”

“Love you, too.” He replied, flipping his cell phone shut and squeezing Baileigh’s hand to get her attention again.

“We’re gonna find out what happened to you, okay? Just get some rest…Tommy’s calling your family, we’ll get you all fixed up. I promise.”

She just nodded in response and squeezed his hand hard…hard enough to bruise, hard enough, almost, to break.

“Thank you.”

He let her squeeze, no matter her strength…he was willing to be her lifeline, but not because he promised to.

He does it because he wants to.
