I am putting together a book that contains a calendar and mixed in with each week are recipes, observations and well, just anything else I find interesting. I am giving these to my family for Christmas this year. You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to come up with that many recipes that A)I really LOVE and B)I think can be made by just about anyone. I think that the frustration of trying to prepare something that is above your skill level is what makes many people dislike cooking and I am trying to instill a love of preparing real, whole food in my family.
I have this plastic 'box' where I keep all of the recipes I love. It is close to the same size of a case of wine....maybe a bit bigger. I was going through this last night looking for recipes for my book. I found the very first cookbook I ever owned. It was a Christmas present that I received when I was 9 or 10. It is a cookbook written for children by the fine people at Betty Crocker. Some of the recipes are even made with their 'mixes'. I think I prepared every recipe in that book. My favorite was a cake in the shape of a castle. I loved it so much that I prepared that exact cake as a birthday cake for everyone in my family that year.....and I grew up with 5 brothers and one sister! I'm not sure why my mom allowed me to make this cake for my older brothers who were in Junior High and High School by then and were, I'm sure, not thrilled with a 'castle cake'.
I also found the handout given to me during my seventh grade 'home economics' class. It has a recipe for 'six week bran muffins'. I can't remember and can't figure out why 'six weeks'! But it also has a recipe for 'German Pancakes'.....again, not sure what makes them German, but they are tasty! I know this recipe as it was something I have prepared probably a thousand times since the seventh grade. It was one of Kassi's favorite things for breakfast. This recipe is definitely going into the book!
