Yesterday the Republicans, of course, got spanked in the midterm elections. While I think a strong case could be made that the GOP did not deserve to retain control of Congress, I honestly don't think the American people should have handed control of both chambers to a party that has no coherent strategy for dealing with Iraq, the most important issue facing this country. It will be interesting to watch the Democrats try to articulate a plan for victory in the next few months. I sincerely hope that their plan consists of more than just oversight hearings and impeachment proceedings.
I also find it hard to believe that a party whose members include Bob Menendez, Alan Molhollan, and William Jefferson is going to clean up corruption in DC. The GOP purged Mark Foley, Tom Delay, Bob Ney, etc. from the Republican ranks. The Democrats, however, seem unwilling to confront
My election projections were way off. While I was correct in my assumption that the Dems would take the House, I didn't think they would also pick up the Senate. My prediction that the Dems would only get 18 seats proved to Polyannish as well. I, of course, also predicted that Georgia would beat Kentucky last week. Maybe I shouldn't try to make a career out of placing bets in Vegas!
As I projected, the Republicans had a good night in Georgia. They made major gains in terms of state consitutional offices, picked up 5 seats in the GA House, and maintained their majority in the GA Senate. I am, however, very disappointed that Gary Black lost. He is a great man and would have been a fine Ag Commissioner. With any luck, Gary will replace Irvin in 2010 and begin the process of reforming the defunct Ag Dept.
Anyway, for the good of the country, I wish the new Democratic Congress the best. I hope they are able to work with Bush and promote a positive agenda for the country. We shall see...
