Bud
“In Tecoma,” Bortega explained, “the flowers bud all year long.”
As our captor led us through the Capitol gardens, I whispered to Annie, “Does she think this tour will convince us to stay?”
But Annie’s eyes shone as she bent forward to sniff a blood red flower that snaked up a lamppost. “They’re like roses!”
Bortega smiled. “My father - also a Cindellian refuge - says the same.”
“It’s called a gardenia,” I interjected, finally catching Annie’s eye. “Just ask the slave who grows it.”
My sister’s shoulders fell; I wouldn’t let her forget the cost of this everlasting spring.
