I know I'm super late, both in watching and posting this, but thanks to Spring Break I've finally got some free time.
About a week ago, my school (which can be supah cool sometimes)
decided to play Deathly Hallows at our campus's cinema. [yayisms!]
Because of the epic trailer, I wanted to say that this is their best film adaptation yet(!)
but sadly I'm not convinced. I'm not saying they weren't very accurate in the translation,
everything I remember about the book (until that cutoff point) was there, the movie just
UTTERLY failed to capture the pace and tone of the book.
The breathless quality found in the writing was completely lost.
I remember reading the book and having to remind myself to breath 'cause every page
was exciting, fast-paced, and filled with some danger that our heroes couldn't possibly escape!
The movie doesn't do that. It severely slows down the action and it almost become boring.
I know it's extremely difficult to imbue a film with same mood of a novel but this one totally missed the mark.
And I blame it on the fact that they unnecessarily split this movie into 2 parts.
Obviously because they had to extend the actions and fill time, the story starts to feel aimless.
Kinda reminds me of the same feeling I got from that awful movie, the Last Airbender.
And I know this is a quest movie and there's not always going to be something exciting happening,
they have to show that the characters don't really know what they are doing (I understand that),
but Fellowship of the Ring was a quest movie and it moved a lot faster than this one.
Deathly Hallows doesn't necessarily have to be cut down and have scenes removed to make it more exciting,
but there is a number of ways this movie could have been edited to try to preserve the feelings of danger in this story.
And that's really what it comes down to, the element of danger. There was none.
That first scene when they're escaping the Dursley's house is the only time I feel any tension,
and then it's gone for the rest of the movie. That's just disappointing.
like I said, it's not a matter of accuracy; I think they did a great job getting all the scenes in there.
(they even added unnecessary ones, like Ron's delusional vision of H/Hr making out. wtf?).
I just wished there was a greater sense of the danger and mortality present in the story.
Also wish they did a better job with the humor in the movie.
The scene where Hermione gets angry with Ron in "the Silver Doe"
was so much funnier when I read it . But at least the part of the film
when they're at the Ministry was hilarious. Especially Ron kissing his "wife."
p.s. - kudos to Rupert, his acting gets better and better with every movie. also, Dobby's death scene still made me cry!
