I was planning to just write a random entry about how we spent Moldova's Independence Day (whose 20th anniversary was celebrated here yesterday), but first LJ screwed up all my cuts, and then my associative thinking took me in another direction. So here goes a modified version of my deleted post from yesterday. If you are not interested in stuff like traditional dances and folk music, feel free to ignore this entry 8P
Basically we went to see the military parade that was held on Chisinau's central square. Son was totally awed by all those big and shiny military vehicles, of course ^^ I do not care much about things like that, but having two men in the family - one of whom is already a military officer and responsible namely for military transport - does not leave me much of a choice than to try and memorise the models of all those cars and how they are used on battlefield *rolls eyes hard*
Here are a couple of vids of yesterday's parade:

There was also a concert with music and dances and fireworks in the evening. I took a couple of photos of dancers and singers in their national costumes, so i thought they might be interesting to people who appreciate handicraft and embroidery. I am posting smaller versions here, and also providing direct links to their original size versions, because only they will allow you appreciate the beauty and intricacy of ornaments:

What i love about local dances is that they are quite simple. There are, of course, more "academic" versions performed by professional dance groups, but basic dance moves are very simple, and always involve people dancing together - in pairs, small groups or in a big circle called Moldovan Khora (it resembles Greek Syrtaki). Almost everyone knows them, and none of celebrations - from national holidays to simple weddings - can go without them.

This vid is from last year's Easter festivities btw.
And, finally, my associative thinking did not stop here and i thought i had to add the vid of one of my most fav songs by Zdob si Zdub. I absolutely love the band for elegantly weaving traditional Moldovan music and instruments into songs that sound completely modern. This is one of the best examples of folk-rock i think.

If you are interested in this kind of music, i'd strongly recommend Goran Bregovic. Love his music, his trumpets and this unique Balkan spirit his works convey.
