A bit of patriotism

A hundred and ninety years ago today, we were finally recognized as an independent nation from Spain. o7 We had our problems at first, and we still have some, but I have faith that we'll get over them. One of our writers once said it had taken Europe hundreds of years and uncountable wars to be what it is now and every country had their pace in development. I just hope mine doesn't have to go through any more fights to achieve it. :P

... I'm not eloquent enough to write something decent about it. orz (I have an essay I wrote but it's too TL;DR and translating it would be a nightmare, haha...)

People here don't make huge celebrations of these days, I don't know why... I guess it's more like silent tribute. We hang our flag outside for the day... and that's pretty much it. But when we were taking a friend back home today, his family had put it really high over his house. It looked pretty damn majestic, dramatic waving and everything. :'D As one of my friends said: "We just need the anthem to start playing."

I'll just leave this video that was made a few years ago. I get goosebumps whenever I watch it.

Here's a little fail-ish, rough translation of the first part.

They say that once Earth was finished
God hid between two seas
A treasure of emeralds and water streams
Where he happily went down to take a nap.

I'm from that place, I'm from Colombia
A country of bubbling coffee and faith
Who opens its heart wide apart
For those who discover its beauty.

I walk barefoot from La Guajira to the Amazon
and feel the vibrations on my skin
of the love and the songs,
of the people who give me their embrace.

This is my land
the land that gave me life
This is what's beautiful about my nation
This is Colombia
The one I have within my heart
The one I love
Show your passion.
