Smut 69: Kiss

Detective Jimmy Deakins told himself he went to the toy store that day because his daughter broke the leg of a doll's chair. He wanted to replace it. Furnishing and maintaining the doll house was his job, since it had been his gift, so the errand was his. The toy broke a month earlier, though, and could easily have waited another month. His daughter didn't miss it.

The truth was every time he looked at the small chair sitting on his desk, he didn't think of his daughter at all. Instead he thought of Alex Eames. He saw her dirty blonde hair falling in her eyes or the sardonic smile that suited her all too well. He felt the hip he'd never touched under his hand or her weight against his body.

The truth was that his relationship with his wife had continued to deteriorate to the point of getting a cot for his study. There were discussions of his moving out for a few months so Angie could think. So far he'd resisted the idea. He saw their daughter little enough as it was, which was the problem, or so he was told. He wasn't sure he believed it. After being caught on the couch with his dick in his hand, he'd made a serious effort to turn things around. He stopped taking extra shifts and made plans for the three of them. Angie cancelled them all.

Now he thought Angie had already made her choice. She wanted quit of him for whatever reason. He'd passed the stage of being hurt by it. Now he was angry. The angrier he got, the more he thought of other things he couldn't have. Alex was the most prominent of them. Never forgetting that the passing of one more birthday wouldn't actually make them any closer in age or make a relationship with her any less insane, he still thought of her all the time.

He thought of her open smile and her trim body. He tried very hard not to think about that body being practically virginal and underage. One night he made himself think about what would happen if her father, Sergeant Johnny Eames of the NYPD, ever caught Jimmy touching her. The best fate was getting straight out shot. The options went down hill from there. Most of them ended with him never seeing his daughter again.

It didn't stop him from thinking of her late at night. It didn't stop him from spending the lonely time right before falling asleep with his hand wrapped around his dick, imagining doing things that wouldn't have been legal if she was over twenty one. In his mind's eye she was adventurous, willing and innocently creative. Most importantly, unlike his wife, she wanted him. She always wanted him.

The day he went to the shop was her birthday. As of that day she was seventeen. As of that day, she was above the legal age of consent for New York State. Ignoring his marriage and the inequity created by his age advantage, there was nothing standing his way. Standing outside the shop he snorted loudly. Ignoring those small things. He'd see her, buy the chair, and go. He couldn't even wish her happy birthday because there was no reason for him to know it. Maybe a coworker would mention it.

Only she wasn't there at all. He couldn't keep himself from asking after her, telling the owner how helpful Alex always was. The man gave out information like it was going out of style. He clearly was very fond of Alex and rambled on about how hard she worked, how she wanted to be a cop like her old man, and how excited she was to be going out with her friends that night. By the time he left Jimmy had the chair, a new bathroom set, and the name of the restaurant where Alex was celebrating her birthday.

For her Sweet Sixteen Alex had the big party at a fire hall. Everyone she knew and a bunch she didn't showed up to eat her mom's cooking. The whole thing turned out like a fairy tale and she loved every minute of it. For her seventeenth, though, she wanted something different. The night before her mom made cake, the close family came over, and they had a fairly traditional party. On her birthday, though, it was her and the girls. Five of them at a table in an Italian restaurant, the bill going to her dad, and no real curfew.

The girls were dressed to the nines and Alex felt like a million bucks. She had her hair done, wore a black dress that cut lower than anything she'd ever been allowed to buy before, and was drinking juice from a wine glass. All the girls were laughing too loudly and patting each other on the back about how pretty they were and how clever. Didn't help that they all were fairly pretty and all but one of them more than clever.

Out of them all, only Alex remembered to be nice to the waitress. She made a point to run interference for her friends as the evening went on. It wasn't until dessert was ordered that she realized what was going on. Denise smuggled in a bottle of grain and was spiking the other girls' drinks at their request. Knowing that Alex would never drink if there was a chance in Hell her father would catch her; they hadn't bothered offering her any.

She wasn't nearly as angry at Denise for bringing it as she was at Meredith for letting it go on. When Alex said something, Meredith said it was okay because she wasn't drinking either and would drive everyone home. Never mind the girls were falling over each other, obviously flirting with some college boys at the next table, and starting to look green around the gills, Meredith said it was okay. Alex went to the rest room alone and stood there for a long time, trying to figure out what to do.

The simplest solution was to call her father and get a ride home. Her friends would get in trouble, but she would be off the hook where their safety was concerned. She could call David. He'd come get her, Meredith would get the other girls home, and no one would get caught. But she'd owe David and she didn't want to do that. Her last option was to gather every penny all the girls had and hope like hell it was enough to get her home in a cab. She wasn't too far from home after all.

By the time she got back to the table, her friends were most of the way through their desserts and they had worked themselves into a frenzy. Even though Alex hadn't said a thing to them, they were convinced she was furious, that she hated them and that if she was going to be that way, she could celebrate the last of her birthday on her own. Denise even blew out her birthday candle for her.

She managed to talk them out of their cash before they left her at the table to settle the check. Counting it for the second time, she thought it would get her deep enough into the neighborhood to suffice. She didn't make any move to leave, though, once the check was signed. There really wasn't any point. She checked the half finished glasses around the table and found one with some booze in it. It went down in one burning gulp.

Jimmy watched the girls fight and then leave. He caught enough of it to understand. Rather than being angry on Alex's behalf or even sad for her, he felt a surge of predatory glee. She was alone and vulnerable. That thought carried with it no plan of attack or intention of doing her harm. It was just a momentary hold over from his primitive past. Sighing deeply, he leaned an elbow on the bar and watched her through the mirror. She investigated a second glass to see if it had booze in it, too.

He paid his bar tab and walked over to her table. Just before she slammed back the second drink, he cleared his throat. She jumped and dropped the glass to the table. When she recognized him, her first response was a bright smile and he hated himself. Alone, upset, vulnerable and she was glad to see him. He made a vague gesture to the empty table. "Your friends left in a bit of a rush." He didn't see the point in pretending he didn't know what happened.

Her smile faded. "Yeah. They decided to use up their idiot points tonight. Some kind of special present just for me. Sweet, huh?" She glanced at the glass she'd dropped.

"Not really, no." He gestured to the small cake with a candle in front of her. "I can think of better birthday presents. Much better ones." He looked at the floor for a moment, embarrassed at just what he wanted to give her.

She sighed deeply and nodded. "Yeah, well, like I said. Idiots. They'll feel awful about it some time late tomorrow and I'm sure they'll try and make it up to me."

He pointed to the cash on the table. "At least they helped pay." He'd heard the discussion about cab fare, but thought she wouldn't like knowing he was continuing his habit of eavesdropping on her.

She looked at the money and shook her head, then she pulled out the chair next to her and indicated he should sit. She waited until he did before explaining about the cab and her plan. At no point did her voice carry any self pity and it didn't carry much anger. Her decision was made; all she had left was to carry it out. He had spent enough time thinking inappropriate things about her that the idea of her walking through her neighborhood in the dark in that dress scared him. She was very small.

When she reached for the half full glass again, it was time for Jimmy to make a decision. He could sit with her for a while, until she was ready to go, then he could get her a cab and slip the driver enough to cover her fare. That was the reasonable choice. He would leave her with a nice conversation and a safe ride home. He would also be well away from any temptation.

Or he could offer her a ride. He could put her in his car, take her right to her door, and be certain she was safe from strangers. There wasn't a damn thing he could do to keep her safe from his intentions but keep his hands securely on the steering wheel the whole time. She was watching him. He had to make some decision.

In the end she made the decision for him. She folded the cash up into a need bundle, shoved it in her purse and looked up at him. "Would you give me a ride home, Mr. Deakins?"

Her birthday party was over, ruined handily by her friends. Sitting there served no purpose. Maybe if she could sit alone with a man she liked, and who she knew at least thought she was pretty, the night could still be salvaged. Just being close to him for a little while would make her feel better. She'd have his smell and the sound of his voice to keep her from breaking down into tears when she got to her room. Alex really didn't want to do that.

She could see a struggle on his face when she asked. Being alone with a girl half his age, at night, might look bad, though. He had a reputation to think of. She didn't want to do anything to get him in trouble. Of course, for all she knew his wife was sitting across the room somewhere. She put her head on her hand and watched him while he made up his mind.

When he stood slowly and put his hand out to her, she stared at it for a minute, not sure what it meant. She looked up at him and smiled as realization dawned. Her much smaller hand went into his and she stood. She watched their hands carefully as he put hers on his arm and then held it while they walked out of the restaurant.

He could have left her standing outside the restaurant at that point and her night would have been made. He smelled so good she had to fight not to take obviously deep breaths. She could feel the muscles in his forearm even through his suit jacket. And he was so damn tall. She didn't feel younger next to him; she felt grown. Her fingers tightened on his arm when he opened the car door for her.

Jimmy got her settled, then stood behind the car for a minute. He also seriously considered taking his jacket off and laying it over his lap. The gentle pressure on his arm was enough to make him worry about embarrassing himself with his reaction. Or frightening her. Wanting a kiss in a crowded public place was very different from seeing the old man driving you home with a raging hard on. He took a couple deep breaths, took off his jacket, and went to get in the car.

Alex had turned in her seat and leaned against the door. She had one leg under her and her skirt rode up enough that he could see a bit of leg. He was very glad of the jacket over the evidence of how much he liked that bit of leg. He got the car on the road and headed generally toward her home before asking for the address.

For all his fantasies about teaching her how a man would take his time pleasing her, one soft touch and a flash of leg was enough to drive him crazy. Being able to hear her breathing might be enough, really. She wasn't talking at all, just watching him drive. Another girl might babble about her friends and what they'd done, but she just kept watching him.

Finally he glanced over and raised an eyebrow. "What?"

He was answered with a blush and an odd little smile. He met her eyes briefly before looking back at the road. There was expectation in that smile. Maybe a little hope. It was the same expression she had at the carnival. The expression that said, "Please kiss me. It'll be good."

His hands tightened painfully on the steering wheel and he kept his eyes front. If he looked back and she wore the same expression he'd pull over. He'd pull over and have her pinned to the door before she knew what hit her. He would know what color her panties were, how her most intimate places smelled and feel her trembling with need before he let her go.

He would let her go. He had to. She wasn't his and never would be. Still, the idea of getting just that one taste was nearly enough to make him drive off the road. One taste. He groaned softly and shifted his hands on the wheel. He couldn't think that way while she was in the car with him. Not when he could reach out and put a hand on her. Not when he could smell her perfume.

Alex's hands tightened in her lap. She'd done something to upset him. His hands kept clenching on the wheel and he wouldn't look at her. All she'd done was smile. Maybe he hadn't really wanted to take her home. The upset from the restaurant threatened to return until she realized it wasn't just his hands that were moving. He squirmed a little at every stop sign and red light. At first she wasn't sure what it was, then she saw him glance toward his lap.

He had his jacket there. She hadn't noticed him put it on his lap when he got in; her eyes were on his face. When she watched how he moved more carefully, she was pretty sure she knew why. She'd made David squirm that way more than once. She couldn't believe it. She hadn't done anything but smile at him. Her dress was nice, but it wasn't that nice. What ever it was she'd done, by the time they were three blocks from her house, his hands were white on the steering wheel.

He pulled over a block from her house, around the corner where they wouldn't be seen. For an instant her heart leapt. He was going to do something. She hadn't been imagining any of it and he was going to kiss her. When he inhaled slowly and turned to her, she licked her lips to be ready.

"I thought you might not want to explain why it isn't your friend's car dropping you off." He didn't turn to face her. His body was almost rigid with tension.

Alex glanced toward her house, then looked back at him. He wasn't going to do it. He wasn't going to kiss her. It was her fucking birthday, her friends had ditched her and he wasn't even going to kiss her cheek? Even if it meant he never spoke to her again, she was getting her birthday kiss. It never crossed her mind he might do her any harm.

Alex unlatched her door, then turned back to him. She didn't give him any warning. Before he could react she was across the seat and half in his lap. She got an arm around his neck and pressed her lips firmly against his. There wasn't much grace to it, but there was no way he could mistake her intent. Her free hand went to his chest, rubbing him in small circles while she deepened the kiss.

She didn't think about him stopping her. She only thought about how amazing he tasted. He'd had a beer at the restaurant and a cigarette. Underneath it was something that was just him. Moaning, she shifted in his lap. The minute she moved she felt his erection against her ass. The next moan had a different sound. She'd have blushed if she wasn't already flushed with need.

His arms never closed around her, but he did return the kiss. When she pushed her tongue against his lips, he opened to her. His moan didn't sound so very different from hers. She had no idea how long they were like that. All she knew was his moan changed again, taking on an edge of panic. His hips bucked into her and she understood. If they didn't stop, they weren't going to. Alex didn't want to stop. She could have sat there kissing him until dawn and still not learned everything about his flavor.

He moaned again and she pulled away from him. The moment they weren't kissing, he rested his forehead against hers and whimpered. She nodded slightly. They sat that way for a little while before he whispered. "Happy birthday, Alex."

She tipped her face forward and kissed him very lightly, then slid out of his lap. Just before she got out of the car, she smiled. "Thank you, Jimmy. You've given me the best gift." She left without saying anything else, closing the car door gently and walking toward her house without looking back.

Jimmy couldn't drive for almost fifteen minutes. A gorgeous, sexy, willing girl had put herself in his lap and kissed him until he couldn't breath. He'd make it to his deathbed and never understand what gave him the control not to take her on the front seat of that car. Never.

He drove around the city for well over two hours before heading home, licking his lips and touching his chest where she'd put her hand. Beautiful. Tender. Willing. And he'd told her to go. Not just let her go, but made it clear she had to. He wasn't that good a man. He just wasn't.

When he got home, Angie was waiting up for him. She took one look at him and went upstairs to be without a word. He didn't bother going after her; he headed straight for his cot in the study and fell on it in a heap. Tomorrow was soon enough to worry about any of it.
