The first real day of my PhD

Feb 16, 2010 21:37

The first real day of my PhD begun not so well: I woke up later than what needed and had to run to catch the bus, which I missed anyways. Running without proper warm-up caused my leg to ache again, and I even arrived late in the lab. Too bad that my boss wasn't even there, and neither C, the student that is doing her internship for her thesis. So, I run for nothing.
There, I just assisted her and A, another PhD student, in doing other experiments. I realized that I lost my hand in those things. :( I didn't practice for almost year, so I have to get used to pipettes and eppendorfs again. I hope the experiments I did today go smoothly.
The lab environment is good, the guys and girls there are very friendly and nice to me. They listen to my questions without looking and answering at me like I'm some sort of idiot, and explain things without looking annoyed (like some other people did in the past, in another setting). We went to have some coffee twice in the arc of the day and I went to have lunch with C and my boss. It was funny and I was relaxed with them.
Tomorrow I'll work with my boss. I'll work with mice again. I just hope they don't ask me to kill them. I just can't do that, but I think they know that because I told them and they seemed ok with it.
Anyways, I'm tired but somehow relieved. It seems a nice work environment. I hope to get used to the new methodologies and become indipendent very soon.
