i got my band newsletter today. ugh. i hate that letter. anyways, marching band practice begins on august 1 at 8am. the music for the show this year looks interesting. it's based off of various symphonies by samuel barber. we've had awesome music the last two years, with holst's "the planets" and mussorgsky's "pictures at an exhibition", so i hope this year matches that, at least. i don't think i've ever heard any of barber's symphonies performed before.
ack, i just remembered that i'm going to be in wind ensemble next year. that's the top band in my school. it makes me so nervous because the wind ensemble has always been considered one of the best bands in the state by various judges and the tmea and they never get anything but ones at competition. and the clarinet section is usually very good, especially considering our band director is one himself. i just hope i'm good enough. they always play the best music. it sucks that they played "tempered steel" two years ago though because that means we won't get it this year. i love that song. for some reason, i really want to listen to all of my lotr soundtracks right now. but the cds are either missing or scratched. :( that's just depressing.
moving on: i'm still lacking the inspiration to write anything even though i have an unfinished fic and a new story idea. i don't really know why. i think it may be in part to the stress already striking about the upcoming school year. i still haven't finished one flew over the cuckoo's nest and i have two more books to read. anyways, i have goals set for tomorrow which makes me feel better because daily goals are so much easier to handle than longterm ones for me. i have a set amount of pages to read, my room to clean, a trip to book haven and borders planned, and clarinet lessons to attend. i haven't been able to practice the piano lately because my mom has something in the front living room that's blocking access to it.
charles rochester young; "tempered steel"nothing can quite compare to listening to this piece being performed live. there's this one percussive crash that happens after a mellow flute and clarinet part that doesn't come across in the recording very well. but the first time i heard it, when this was being performed at the moore's opera house, it was very loud. i was sleepy during the performance but that crash woke me up instantly. it was so brilliant. :D this recording is from the creek wind ensemble from 2001-2002. i think this is from their performance at carnegie hall and not at the moore's opera house, but i'm not sure.
alfred reed; "armenian dances (part one)"this is the piece that i played last year with the symphonic band, the second band at my school. the first clarinet part of this piece was wonderful, in my opinion. but so very complex in some places! tuning in the slow sections was such a bitch and there were some runs that just tortured my fingers. although in retrospect they weren't that hard once i got them down. my favorite section of this piece is probably the 5/8 that opens with the percussion. this recording is from the creek symphonic band from 2001-2002. there are quite a few obvious mistakes in it, including bad tuning and a squeak. but the overall performance is pretty good.
anyways, i was looking through my files of pictures earlier today, found these, and decided to share. i needed some pretty football distraction since i read through all the player bios on the dynamo page already today. and oh, i just have to say: i love the houston dynamo. and fc dallas sucks. :P
i have such a thing for sleeve tugging. :) i don't know why but i do. this is quite possibly my favorite picture of him. i just really like the paleness of the photograph.
this is another one of my favorite pictures of him. is it wrong that i think he looks good covered in blood? anyways, he's definitely not hesitant to get into the middle of action.
aw, i love his smile. but every time i see this photo, i can't help but be glad that jar isn't drilling footballs at me. because damn, that must have been one very powerful kick.
