In the face of recent events on the campus of Virginia Tech there are a few things that as an alumni I wanted to make known:

Virginia Tech is an incredible school doing incredible things. They are one of the few universities I know with emergency call boxes all over the place, and their own police force. Not a staff of rent-a-cops, but actual police. They deal with the largest campus in the state and any other couple days 1/2 the polulation would be asking what VT was and where it was because they don't have shit like this masacre happen.

Not only that, but this campus is what they call an open campus. The town is literally centered around the campus, and the campus on a daily basis spills over into the town. It's actually a really incredible thing. It makes you feel as though you're living in the community at large rather than simply on campus.

For those in the media that wish to antagonize the masses and sling mud on the campus officials, my response in this: They did everything they could have done. To those seeking to change our laws to make it tougher to get a gun let me say this: The shooter had NO CRIMINAL RECORD. No mental health issues diagnosed by anyone, so therefore a couple days to wait for authorixzation to get a gun wouldn't have made a difference. This Guy bought a gun, waited his 30 day mandatory period, then bought his second one. Perhaps changing our laws would effect future shootings, but this one would not have been changed. He knew what he wanted to do and he did it, taking all the time it required to get it just the way he wanted.

When people say that everyone on campus is outraged at how this has all been handled, know this: When the university president got up to speak at the convocation @ Cassel Colliseum, the entire mass of students/faculty/parents gave the man a standing ovation. That should tell you all you need to know about how outraged they are at him.

My thoughts and prayers are with those left behind, and those who have to face the fallout. The alumni association is attempting to create a memorial day Friday April 20 where the public at large wears orange and or maroon to memorialize those we lost and show solidarity across the country for what these people had to go through.

*Sighs* Thank you.
