”Jared!” Peter yelled at the head that was currently under water, making its way back from the other side of the lake. “Jared!”
“I don’t think he can hear you.” Carmen said and Peter yelped a little as she sneaked up behind him. “He’s pretty fast.”
“Yeah, I know.” Peter said “Not fast enough though, we ran out of firewood and we can’t find the keys to the shed and I don’t think Jare will like it if we snoop around.”
“So that’s why it was so chilly inside.” Carmen said as she rubbed her arms “It’s the lake I guess, it’s really nice when the sun’s out though.”
“I like it here; maybe we should make this an annual thing, the four of us?” Peter asked and smiled down at her “It’ll be nice getting away from the city and work, from time to time.”
“Yeah, maybe I can get myself a hubby too, so I won’t feel like I’m intruding your love shack.” Carmen said and nudged his hip.
“Not funny.” Peter said and held up a finger to make his point.
“It’s cool, you guys seem happy, it’s nice.” She said and hooked her arm around Peter’s and rested her head on the side of his shoulder. “It’s getting pretty serious, huh?”
“I guess so.” Peter said “Don’t tell him that though, he’ll freak out.”
Carmen smiled against his arm and looked up to meet his eyes “I don’t think so.” She said and yelled out of the lake “Hey, Franklin, get your ass up on land, we have a situation!”
This actually made Jared stop his swimming and look up to see them standing there waving at him, Peter pretended that it was because he was a lot closer to land and not the fact that Carmen was scary when she was commanding.
“What?” He yelled back.
“Keys to the shed?” Peter asked.
“Cabinet above the fridge!” Jared answered “Hold on, I’ll be right there.”
“I’ll go tell Damien before he tears the house apart.” Carmen said and slapped Peter’s arm playfully before heading back to the cabin.
Peter sighed and sat down on the chair by the boat house that Jared always threw his towel before going in the water. He took a deep breath again, everything was so quiet, he missed the city, but there was something about this place that felt right at the moment.
Suddenly Jared’s head popped up from the water “Hey, there!” He said as he scrambled up on land, and made his way towards Peter.
“Hey, nice swim?” Peter asked as he threw the towel to Jared.
“Yeah, you should have come with.” Jared answered as he leaned over Peter and grinned. Peter swallowed a bit, knowing that Jared was noticing the way his eyes were roaming over his half-naked body.
“Thought this was only a morning thing.” Peter said as he stood up and took the towel from Jared’s hands, putting it around the other man’s neck and using it to pull Jared towards him in a sweet kiss.
“Mm, just thought I’d burn off some of that pie, now that I’m dating a greek god.” Jared said playfully, biting his lip and trying his best to look at Peter without standing on his toes.
“Did you just give me a sincere compliment; did you hit your head?”
“Shut up, asshole.”
Peter laughed “That’s better.” He said and kissed the top of Jared’s head before sneaking a hand around his shoulder and leading them back to the cabin. “It’s cold, come on, let’s get inside.”
…
Jared was almost asleep when he could hear Peter’s whispered “you have nothing to worry about, Jare, you’re gorgeous.” And he couldn’t help but smile against his pillow and scoot a little closer to the warm body behind him.
..
Peter woke earlier than usual the next morning, since they had forgotten to close the blinds the previous night, letting the light into the room, he stretched out, but there were just warm sheets where he expected to find Jared’s body.
“Jared?” he asked sleepily as he sat up and rubbed his eyes.
“Hey, up already?” Jared asked as he flopped down on the bed, already in his swim trunks.
Peter groaned “Really, Jare? You went swimming twice yesterday.”
“I won’t be long, just wanted to get one last swim in before we pack up.” He said “Come with me.”
“I don’t think so.” Peter said as he flopped back down on the bed, looking annoyed when Jared leaned over him.
“I’ll make it worth your while.” Jared said and wiggled his eyebrows and grinned before biting his lips, knowing exactly what it did to his best friend.
That caught Peter’s attention though “Yeah?”
“Come on.”
“I hate you.”
“You love me.” Jared answered and Peter cocked his head to the side of that and smiled at Jared, leaning up to meet his lips.
“I guess, every now and then.”
“You love me, forever and ever.”
…
“You asshole!” Peter yelled after Jared had pushed him into the water.
Jared just laughed “You were so slow, come on!” he said before jumping into the water himself.
“It’s so freaking cold.” Peter said and pouted when everyone else was laughing at him from the deck above them. They weren’t the only one wanting to get up early and enjoy the last morning at the lake house.
“Don’t be a baby.”
“You’re a baby.”
Jared laughed again and splashed some water in Peter’s face “Come on, then.”
“I am not swimming across the entire lake!” Peter objected before they’d even moved an inch.
Jared just grinned “Halfway and back?”
Peter turned his head and tried to estimate how far it would be “Yeah, okay.”
“Stay with me, okay?” Jared said as he started swimming and Peter quickly followed him.
“Why, is there something down here? Hey, keep your head above water.” He said when Jared started getting into the swimming.
“You know, you’re gonna get tired real quick if you don’t stop talking.” Jared commented.
Turned out he was right.
“Hold on.” Peter said as they were almost halfway across the lake.
“Tired?” Jared joked as they stopped for a while, Peter just leaning back and floating on the water the best he could.
“Yeah, how the hell do you do this?”
“Don’t know, just do.” Jared answered as he moved closer to Peter and they could hear an abstent ‘don’t do anything gross, we can still see you!’ that sounded a lot like Carmen coming from the deck, but they ignored it.
“You okay?” Jared asked with a smile.
“I don’t like this, god, what if I drown out here?”
“You won’t.”
“The sex was not worth this.”
“Hey!” Jared said, clearly offended and was stupid enough to splash water on Peter, making him flail around like he was drowning. “Okay, calm down.” He said as he took a hold of Peter’s hips.
Peter put his hands on Jared’s shoulders, letting the other man keep him above water. “I’ll never let go, Jack.”
“Not funny.” Peter pouted and leaned his forehead against Jared’s.
“Did you guys not hear Carmen?” Hannah then yelled and Jared waved a hand at her, they were so far out, how could they even see them clearly? Jared had a feeling they had found a pair of binoculars. Perverts.
“I like being the same height as you.” Jared said and grinned at the other man, Peter just smiled and nodded.
“Not so bad.”
“The next time we go out here, I won’t make you go swimming with me.” Jared said “You like the ocean though.”
“Not the same thing, I have no idea what’s under here.” He said dipped his head to look down at the dark water “And this is really cold.”
“It’s not that bad.”
“The next time?” Peter asked hopefully.
“Next time.” Jared said with a huge smile, tilting his head slightly before they heard Carmen shouting out at them.
“Guys, if you’re done with your bromance bonding time, we should really get going soon if you wanna stop by town!”
Jared waved a hand at them again, signalizing they were coming back in.
“I’m glad we took this trip.” Peter said.
“Me too, come on, I wanna show you something.”
…..
“Oh my God.” Peter said as Jared was standing behind him, biting his fingernails.
“That’s all you’re gonna say?”
“You drew all of this?” Peter asked as he took a look around the room, it wasn’t so much a room as a corner of the basement, but still...
“My dad had to go back to the city for a couple of days one summer and I stayed here, and there was this really bad storm, blew out most of the windows.”
“I remember, you called me before the power went out.” Peter said and sent Jared a smile.
“Yeah, anyway, I stayed down here until it passed and I started drawing all this stuff I wanted to do before I died, and I know it’s ridiculous, but you said you wanted to see some of it, and well, here it is.”
Peter took another look around at the drawings hanging on the wall “I love them.”
“Okay, it’s not funny, don’t mock me.” Jared said as he pulled at Peter’s arm, trying to get him to come back upstairs with him.
“No, really…. Is that-?” He started and then took a closer look at one of the drawings hanging by the corner. “That’s me!”
“No, it’s not.”
“Yes, this is me. You drew me a little on the chubby side though.”
Jared grabbed the drawing from Peter “I actually made you thinner.”
“Shut up.” Peter said and took the drawing back “Is that a rocket?”
“We were going to space.”
“Obviously.” Peter said and took another look around the room “This whole trip has been so weird, man.”
Jared shrugged “How come?”
“It’s like the twilight zone, we’re getting along with Karp, well, kind of, Hannah’s cooking, all of us getting smashed together, and you with your swimming and Sophie and the drawings!”
“But you said you liked that, right?” Jared said, trying and failing not to sound totally insecure. He kind of felt stupid about the whole thing when Peter pointed it out, he’d always been different out at the cabin, because it was pretty much the only time he wasn’t with Peter when they were younger and he needed things to distract himself with to avoid the drama that was his parents.
“Yeah, I mean, growing up, my mom wasn’t exactly, well, normal.”
“Amen to that, I love Colleen.”
“Yeah, I know, and my life has been in constant change for as long as I can remember, with her vegan phases, the spontaneous road trips and holidays, me losing all the weight, girlfriends, school, but the one thing that always made sense to me was you and us, and it’s so weird to see you like this.”
“So, I don’t make sense anymore?”
“No, I mean, it’s so awesome that even now, you still make sense to me.” Peter answered and grinned as he turned around and met Jared’s eyes “You’ll always be that one thing.”
Jared grinned hugely “You’re so gonna get lucky tonight, you know that?”
“That’s what I was going for.” Peter laughed and dragged Jared to a kiss.
“Are you two having sex down here?” Carmen said as she came down the stairs. “Oh, thank god, still on the foreplay, I do not need to walk in on the sex again.”
“That was one time and you should have knocked.” Peter objected.
“You were on the pool table!” Carmen argued as she grimaced.
Jared swallowed and coughed “You guys ready to go?”
“Yeah, all packed up.”
--
“I gotta hand it to you, Stanton, this trip was worth the while.” Hannah said.
“Ah, thank you, Hannah, I hope everyone else is in agreement.”
“Yeah, it was great.”
“Sure.”
“Almost don’t want to leave.”
“Almost.”
“It’s kind of sad to leave.” Pindar said as they closed the trunk of the car and took one last look at the lake.
Jared gave Peter a look and wiggled his eyebrows “It’ll be good to go home though.”
Peter smiled.
This’ll be the last chapter, but I’ll write an epilogue.
