Sewing lessons

It's occured to me that sewing is not like knitting for me. While this seems terribly obvious, let me go into detail first: when I was little, my grandmother taught me the basic knit/purl stockinette and garter stitches, so coming back to it several years later was a lot easier and quicker for me. I can teach myself knitting. However, sewing? I've had absolutely *no* contact with, and I have a crappy machine to boot (so it at times is daunting to try to teach myself anything).

I realize that I've asked people to teach me to sew enough times now that I finally understand that I am not comfortable with trying to teach myself this particular craft. I know a lot of ladies around the bay area who do so very well, and are very busy--but would anyone be willing to give me a couple lessons with a simple project or two? I'm tired of me thinking "Oh, I'll sew that." and it ends up being something that I hand off to my mom to finish (and because I don't see her often, we don't finish it). Or, I'm tired of looking longingly at things such as corsets, realizing it takes some determination but it isn't *impossible* to make some of these things, I just don't have the $300 to lay down for that sort of work that I can possibly do myself. However, if I have no idea where to begin, I can't begin. I'm tired of going to modeling shoots with the same items over and over and I don't even know how to *pin* my clothing to make new and interesting looks. And, I'm tired of looking at beautiful clothing online that I'd love to wear but complain about the money for all the time. I'm tired of being uncreative with my crafting and having this small wall in front of me preventing me from doing what I'd like to do.

So, this rant is essentially a big request: is anyone bay-area oriented willing to set aside a little time and help me learn to sew, if only a little? It could be something simple, or a few things, or whatever. I am willing to travel a bit for it.

crafty, request
