Coraline and a rant on Tim Burton.

I went to see Coraline two days ago, and it was amazing. From the consistency of production/animation quality, to the sheer magnitude of artistic thought put into the film, I was just floored. Considering it was also made by LAIKA, an independent animation company using beautifully smooth and amazing stop-motion techniques... I don't know, I ( Read more... )

While I kinda like Tim Burton, I know the type of fans your talking about and see them in their relationship with a variety of art. Some people like something so much (or have a particular rightous attitude about theit likes) that they become positivly evangalistic when meeting people who don't the same exposure or apreciation towards whatever their like is.
They don't seem to understand that the fanatisim of their apreciation and disrespect of the validity of opinion held by anyone who "just hasn't seen the right stuff yet" or (woe be unto them) those who have seen it and dissagree is a huge turn off to give the art a second chance.
Woah, huge run-on sentence, one sec....nope don't have time to improve it, my apologies to all readers.

The funny thing is that I have the same feelings towards the AUTHOR of the movie Coraline, Niel Gaiman. At first the fetishization (as you say) of his fans turned me off, and dabbling into his work only proved my initial reactions.
Then the evangelical nature of his fans prevented me from giving him a second chance. Unfortunatly this lead to the Fans use of appealing to the popularity of the writer was applied so demeaningly that all I could say was "I didn't foster my geekyness to like what everyone else likes."
I just don't see popularity as a good argument. of your going to like sometjing, you will have your own internal reasons.
Keep on fighting the good fight, Mina.

I really enjoy some work by Neil Gaiman. I can even say he's one of my regular "favorites" because I own a number of his things, read a lot of his work, and among other things, find him to be a sexy older British man. However, I am in no way fanatic, and there are works of his I just haven't been able to digest well. Even then, it's understandable why someone might not be able to get behind his work if fans ruin it.

Reasonable Burton fans I can handle and enjoy talking to. I call myself a reasonable Gaiman fan, and at the best of times a reasonable Burton appreciator. But... ugh.

My huge Tim Burton crush aside, I know exactly what you mean about the fanatics.

I think Corpse Bridge was a very good movie in its own right. He didn't make it to be compared or to spiritually succeed Nightmare at all, but of course thats all people do.
