Chapter 5 - See

"You're spacing out again kid." YooChun commented off-handedly, sneaking another glance at JaeJoong through the mirror. "It's your birthday. You're supposed to be happy. You'll only turn 17 once you know."

JaeJoong kept his mouth shut, only biting his lips as a silent reply. YooChun swiftly parked his car and killed the engine. "Don't tell me you're sulking because you want to throw a party?"

He chuckled when JaeJoong angrily huffed. "Hey, don't blame me. That's my best guess. Any other kids at your age only cares bout popularity and parties."

"Not me. I don't. I'd never even celebrate my birthday for as long as I can remember... It means nothing to me."

YooChun smiled knowingly. "I know. So now do you care to tell me what's in that pretty head of yours?"

JaeJoong wrinkled his forehead in heavy rebuttal. The boy hated being called pretty. But YooChun started calling him pretty months ago, ever since the boy started gaining weight and no longer look as frawny and thin like he used to be. Especially after he cut his hair and started styling it to his liking. "I'm not pretty."

"I didn't say you were." YooChun chuckled good-heartedly.

"But you implied it!" JaeJoong burst in annoyance.

Surprised, YooChun turned his body halfway so that he could look at JaeJoong without having to crane his neck. "JaeJoong, what's wrong?"

His voice was soft and full of worry, JaeJoong immediately felt bad for shouting at him. What's wrong with me? I'm not like this. His master had definitely spoiled him too much, he concluded in disappointment. "Sorry..." He mumbled softly, head lowered in shame and regret.

"Don't tell me you're sorry. Tell me what's bugging you."

There it is again. The sad, almost hurtful look was back on the boy's face before he looked away slowly. "I don't know."

"You don't know?"

JaeJoong sighed, playing with his hands before he spoke. "YooChun hyung... How long have you worked for Master?"

YooChun frowned at the unexpected question. "About five years."

"Oh."

"What oh?" YooChun raised an eyebrow, urging the dejected boy to confide in him. He never failed to make JaeJoong talk and he knows the boy can't avoid him.

"Do you... Do you think-" JaeJoong abruptly shakes his head. "Uhm, it's nothing."

"JaeJoong."

The boy sighed loudly before giving in. "I just- Would it take that long for Master to trust me?" JaeJoong finally mumbled, not daring to look at the man in front of him. I feel so stupid. YooChun hyung must think I'm so unreasonable and weird.

To his surprise, YooChun laughed full of amusement. "You're so naive."

JaeJoong frowned at the choice of adjective. He's anything but naive. "What do you mean?"

"You don't understand YunHo yet." YooChun said, smiling gently at JaeJoong. "But I don't blame you... YunHo's a hard man to read. You might feel frustrated right now but don't be. You see, if it was up to him, I'm sure he won't allow anyone, me included, to ever understand him. But I had known him since I was six so it's out of his control. I can see the white in his black because I can. Not because he let me. But you JaeJoong-" His eyes carried an even gentler emotion as he looked into the boy's orbits. "You're different. You might not realise it but I've never seen him care for anyone who's not family as much as he's cared for you. That said, I'm sure you had his trust. But he's just not the kind of man that would show anyone his true self."

JaeJoong blinked slowly, eyes growing distant. Then I won't ever understand him?

"JaeJoong?"

JaeJoong recovered from his musing abruptly, staring wide-eyed at YooChun in confusion.

"Don't you want to go inside?"

The boy looked outside the tinted window and realized that they'd arrived at the mansion long time ago. "Uh. Thank you hyung."

As soon as the boy went inside, YooChun fished out his phone and dialled a number he remembered by heart. He wasn't at all surprised when the man answered the just call after the first few ring. "YunHo."

'What's wrong YooChun?'

YooChun could smile at the hint of controlled worry but decide against it. "JaeJoong's not happy." He sighed.

YunHo was silent for a while. 'Did you tell him he can go anywhere and buy anything he wanted today?'

"I did and he doesn't want to. He seems out of it a bit today. I guess the kid's just lonely. It's always me and him you know."

Again, another long silence. 'I'm busy.' Without a word more, the line was dead. Huh. Seems like only the kid can reach you now huh YunHo? YooChun chuckled and starts the engine. Well, my work's done. He can leave JaeJoong alone if the boy was at the mansion. Although it's true that at one look the mansion was pretty barren and was only guarded by just a few men, nobody could step foot on the Jung's ground uninvited. Even YooChun doesn't know how many people was actually guarding the mansion from the outside. All he knows is that the mansion's the safest, most protected place he'd ever known.

"Why so sad?" YunHo asked after JaeJoong sighed forlornly at the end of his song. The song was too depressive in YunHo's thought. Nothing like JaeJoong. Nothing I ever want him to be.

"Master. You're home." JaeJoong got up and bowed politely, too politely, causing YunHo to walk to him. JaeJoong had never acted so distant with him after he'd adapt to living with him. YunHo was too used to the eager boy who acted like YunHo was his centre of everything that he found himself unable to accept the sudden change.

"JaeJoong, what's wrong?"

JaeJoong shied away instantly when YunHo touched his shoulder. He shakes his head, mumbling 'nothing' awkwardly.

YunHo tightened his fists unconsciously. "You're supposed to be happy on your birthday."

"... Sorry..."

YunHo eyed him with increasing distress. "Don't apologize. JaeJoong, just tell me what you want."

JaeJoong looked up, immediately feeling a weird kind of feeling fluttering in his stomach because his master was looking at him like that. He was having trouble to form any kind of coherent reply with the way YunHo was looking at him.

"I'm sorry I wasn't home today." The boy's carefully thought reply got caught miserably in his throat at that. He'd never heard YunHo aplogizing to anyone before. Suddenly, YooChun's voice rang in his head. 'You're different?' Am I? Maybe I am different... He's not sure why but it strangely makes him felt good. Relieved. And proud.

"It- It's okay...' JaeJoong whsipered, feeling as if he can't be louder or else he'll ruin something. This moment.

Feeling strange, YunHo looked away. The man's eyes flickered to JaeJoong's wrist. "It doesn't look good on you." He noted coldly, secretly disliking the fact that his birthday present wasn't suitable for the birthday boy.

Unknown to him, his nonchalant comment had JaeJoong's heart drop to the floor. "But I like it... It's from you. I want to wear it."

"I'll get you something else."

"But-"

"The watch's not suitable for you." YunHo stated again, eyes going up to look at JaeJoong in finality. What he saw however, make his heart clenched. JaeJoong was looking so down, so sad again. I can't understand. The boy looks even more depressed than when he'd seen the boy singing just before. He sighed in utter disdain, not liking what he's feeling.

"Let's go."

"Huh?"

"We're going out."

JaeJoong's eyes widened in surprise. "With you Master? But it's late!"

"It' only 11.20." The man supplied, looking at his own expensive watch. "Come."

The man swiftly turned his heel and walked out of the room, leaving JaeJoong stumbling behind him with confusion written all over his face. It is actually his first time going out with his master. The only time he'd spend with YunHo was the time YunHo was home. For some reason, the man never brought JaeJoong out with him or tags along the rare time JaeJoong goes out. It's always his YooChun hyung that accompanied him.

"Master...? Where are we?" JaeJoong asked as he got out of the car, inhaling the fresh chilly midnight air.

"Heaven." YunHo answered curtly, a soft smile on his face. He turned to his men, face tight again. "Stay here. Don't slack off."

The men nodded, already forming a quick formation and YunHo shifted his attention back to JaeJoong. "Come. I'll show you something." With that said, YunHo walked deeper into the meadow. All his step surprisingly confident and sure, leaving JaeJoong to fasten his step in order to catch up with him.

"Where are we going?" JaeJoong panted between laboured breaths. Though he's getting stronger and healthier, his asthma had not improved that much. His life in the casino had undoubtedly worsened his condition and it's no use to deny that he'd spend too much time there. Stupid... Useless...

"Just a little more." YunHo stopped, turning around to wait for JaeJoong as realization dawned upon him. Strictly, he linked his arm with JaeJoong, directing the boy with a slower pace.

"We're here." The man announced as they stopped in front of a particularly big tree. "It still haven't changed that much."

Huh? JaeJoong looked around in confusion. They're now surrounded by growing grass, heavy bushes and tall trees. So? "Where are we?"

"Shhh..." YunHo hushed him, pushing through a bush near the tree and gently nudging the boy to pass through it. JaeJoong did so obediently and he gasped at the sight in front of him. There was a small lake and the reflection of the moon was clearly painted on its surface, causing JaeJoong to gasp softly.

"Mas-"

"Shhh..." Again, the man hushed him away. Frowning, JaeJoong look back at him only to have his face turned other way by his master's rough gentle hands.

JaeJoong widened his eyes and gasped again as his sight landed upon a particularly hidden part of the lake. Fireflies! There were tens, no, hundreds, of them blinking amazingly near there.

"Beautiful isn't it?" Hearing his master's soft whisper, JaeJoong could only nod as he continues to stare in awe. "Are you happy now?" YunHo asked again, still unfamiliarly soft and gentle, and JaeJoong could have cried. Yes. Yes. He nod.

Silence lingered between them and JaeJoong swore he could hear his master's steady heartbeat coaxing him into a state of unknown blissfulness.

"Thank you." JaeJoong said audibly after a while, blinking away a teardrop from spilling. He hadn't cried for a long time, learning fast that tears meant nothing at the casino and it did nothing to ease his suffering. But here he was, feeling like the only thing he can do, should do, is cry. Why?

"Please don't ever be sad again JaeJoong. You have to shine for me."
