Why wasn't this monster given the death penalty?

A woman accused of giving her 7-year-old daughter a fatal dose of antidepressant to block an sex-abuse investigation was convicted of murder.

Donna A. Yost, 46, faces an automatic penalty of life in prison without parole at her sentencing in June.

"You're all wrong," said Yost, who broke into tears after the verdict was read Thursday.

Yost was arrested months after her daughter, Monique, died in October 1999.

Prosecutors said Yost overdosed the girl while trying to block an investigation into allegations that the girl was sexually abused by a teenage friend and others.

Defense lawyer Edward M. Czuprynski had argued that prosecutors failed to consider other possible causes for Monique Yost's death, including accidental overdose, suicide or another killer.

Prosecutors dismissed the claim. "For six years, the defense has been blaming everyone in sight for the situation," Joseph K. Sheeran told The Bay City Times.

A district judge had earlier thrown out charges against the mother, but the state Supreme Court ordered the murder charges reinstated in 2003.
