Scott and my addiction to Rock Band comes purely by the good graces of Nikki & Mike, who allow us to crash their place once a week and make them play 'Still Alive' and 'Beetlebum' AGAIN.
I'll be the first to admit I am not nearly as well-versed in rock as Nikki or Scott, but nevertheless I have had fun learning these classic songs which I have somehow remained blissfully unaware of in my little pop-world.
With RB2 looming in a few short months, we too have a playlist Wish list, so here it is.
Mind you, a prevailing goal is still to conquer RB1's Endless Setlist before 2 comes out. We just have to find a spare five hours or so and a way to stop Nikki from getting too bored because she'd have to play the whole thing on only Hard ;p
Ranked by decade. Scott and I also tried to think of songs which would be as equal to all parts as possible and with minimal keyboard. Harmonix needs to develop a keytar controller next... I don't care HOW, just do it.
60's:
Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane)
The Lemon Song (Led Zeppelin)
- never gonna happen, I know, but representin' Zepp AND 60s.
Spirit in the Sky (Norman Greenbaum)
Surfin' USA (Beach Boys)
Another Little Piece of my Heart (Big Brother & the Holding Company)
- my voice is the polar opposite of Janis', but dammit if singing her wouldn't be awesome.
Anything by the Jimi Hendrix Experience -
Hey Joe (slow) or
Manic Depression (upbeat)
Mama Told Me (Three Dog Night)
Day Tripper(bonus go-go dancers!)
Revolution,
Helter Skelter (The Beatles)
- ANYTHING by Beatles would make me happy, though
Ohio (Crosby Stills Nash & Young)
Layla (Derek & the Dominoes) - FUCK yeah.
70's
Wish You were Here or
Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd) - who doesn't want Floyd?
Fat Bottomed Girls (Queen) - but really, ANYTHING by Queen
I Found Out (John Lennon)
One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer (George Thorogood)
80's
Hazy Shade of Winter (The Bangles) - cover, but one of the good ones
Boys Don't Cry (the Cure)
I'll Stop the World and Melt with You (Modern English)
I want it all (Queen) - heart Brian May (and you too, Freddie...)
I Touch Myself (Divinyls) - bring on Chrissie!!
Footloose (Kenny Loggins - shut up)
- one of pop's more Rockier hits. The guitars DO get more attention than the synths, I promise.
End of the World as we Know it (and I feel Fine) ( R.E.M)
- how else are you going to learn the rest of the words?
Jessie's Girl (Rick Springfield)
The Majesty of Rock (Spinal Tap)
- if GH can get Tap, so can RB, dammit!
Here I go Again (Whitesnake)
Need You Tonight or
Suicide Blonde (INXS)
Desire (U2)
- The Edge's pulsing riff and famous open-fifths would give your index and pinky a good stretching.
Simply Irresistible (Robert Palmer) - Another As If! shout-out, Sandy's theme song
90's
Hungerstrike (Temple of the Dog)
Life is a Highway (Tom Cochrane)
4am (Our Lady Peace)
- one from Scott's extensive 'mopey rock' collection ;)
Little Busters (The Pillows)
- One of the better J-rock bands made famous by an anime (FLCL)
Grey Cell Green (Ned's Atomic Dustbin)
Mrs Robinson (The Lemonheads)
- not the best video performance, but like Alien Ant Farm's 'Smooth Criminal', a fun upbeat cover.
Bitch (Meredith Brooks)
- the male RB demographic would explode in nerdrage, but fuck 'em ;p
One Week (Barenaked Ladies)
- the ancestor of 'Here it Goes Again' ;)
Breakfast at Tiffany's (Matchbox 20)
(edit: okay, so it's Deep Blue Something's version, not Matchbox 20. Can't seem to find the latter...)
Just a Girl (No Doubt)
Zombie (Cranberries)
Mach 5 (Presidents of the United States)
Volcano Girls (Veruca Salt)
00's
Elevation (U2)
You Know My Name (Chris Cornell)
- I loved this song when I saw Casino Royale. T and I had Tina sing a re-lyriced version in Diva 2.
Steve McQueen (Sheryl Crow)
C'mon C'mon (The Von Bondies)
PDA (Interpol)
Feel Good Inc. (Gorillaz)
- Gorillaz is known for their eclecticism, but there's a surprising lot going on in this song.
Indie Rockin' (Common Rotation)
-surprisingly hard to find a clear studio recording of them! This is the best live video I could find.
Hard Rock Hallelujah (Lordi)
- one for the thrash horror fans and Eurovision fans :) HUGE fun if you don't take it too seriously. The band certainly don't.
Extraordinary (Liz Phair)
- I got a Liz Phair CD as a freebie during a Border's birthday sale and I've loved her ever since.
Albuquerque (Weird Al)
-I've seen modded versions of this for GH2, but this could totally be the RB2 version of 'Honest Bob and his Factory-Dealer Incentives'
Float On (Modest Mouse)
Fell in Love with a Girl (White Stripes)
- short n sweet, we love this AMV, too :)
Don't Wanna Do This (Divinyls)
My Last Breath or
Bring me to Life (Evanescence)
- the latter might be tricky to chart vocally as the chorus is a duet. Anything from 'Fallen' would be pretty good.
