(A/N: Haha I keep updating don't I? I've had this story in my head forever and I've worked it all out so now I'm just ready to share it w/all of you)
It was four days after the party and Zac already a busy day in front of him. First he had to go to the TV Critics Association Summer Press Tour for High School Musical 2 and then he had to go to the Kitson Jewelry Launch for Hairspray. He was definitly not looking forward to seeing Vanessa today, they hadn't spoken since her drunken kiss rant at the party and he was glad for the space. He arrived at the press tour and got backstage with his fellow cast members.
"Hey Zac." He sat down next to Corbin.
"Hey." He said trying not to take out his annoyance for being there on Corbin.
"Look, I heard about what Vanessa did at the party and I'm sorry, she's really been weird lately." Zac nodded in agreement.
"Listen, I just don't want to talk to you right now." Ashley stormed in with Vanessa following her.
"Come on, will you listen to me."
"No, okay, not now! Get that through your head!" She hissed and sat down. Vanessa stared at her as if she didn't understand and then focused on Zac.
"You hate me too huh?" She asked. Her tone was sharp and full of "Baby V" attitude.
"Vanessa, not now." He simply said and she sighed. The group soon headed out to answer questions about the movie. Zac, Ashley and Vanessa all had trouble pretending things were great while Corbin, Lucas and Monique had trouble pretending that things hadn't been awkward backstage. Once they were off, Zac got ready to head to Kitson when Vanessa stopped him.
"Please talk to me Zac." She pleaded and if Zac wasn't so annoyed he might have had sympathy.
"Vanessa, I have to go."
"Go see Nikki?" He glared at her. "Sorry...I just...I'm sorry Zac, I was wrong, I was drunk, stupid and everything I said was out of line, please just let's get back to normal."
"V...I don't know, I can't deal with this right now." She stared at him with the infamous Vanessa Hudgen's sad eyes and pout. "I'll call you later, okay?"
"Okay." She gave him a quick kiss and he walked out. He didn't know what he was doing, he wanted to breakup with Vanessa but he knew all the drama that would cause but Nikki was worth it. He arrived at the event and joined the group to show off the jewelry. He and Nikki traded necklaces so that she was wearing the Link necklace and he was wearing the Tracy necklace.
"Branding each other, nice way to show off the love man." Elijah whispered teasing him.
"Yeah well why don't you and Amanda just tell everyone you're together?" He shot back.
"Touche Efron." He sat back in his chair and the event went on. Afterwards he and Nikki were together.
"So you look tired." She said.
"Yeah, I had to see Vanessa, that should explain everything."
"What happened?"
"She's sorry, she kept apologizing to me and Ashley but neither of wanted to hear it." He sighed. "I just...I miss the old Vanessa, it's not like she's even the same girl anymore."
"I'm sorry Zac." She really was sorry. She didn't like Vanessa but she hated seeing Zac so upset.
"Yeah, well, it doesn't matter." He smiled. "The rest of the day isn't about her, it's about you and me, now we're in Los Angeles, what ever shall we do?"
"I don't know, you're the one who lives here."
"That's right, let's go Blonsky." He took her hand and they walked through LA looking for somewhere to go. "Here we go, this place is great, you hungry?"
"Sure." They headed inside and got a table.
"So anything you want, on me."
"No way, I'm not making you pay for everything Zac." She shook her head and Zac couldn't help but smile. Vanessa made him pay for everything but Nikki she was so sweet and she didn't need to be taken care of constantly making Zac want to take of her.
"Oh come on, I want to." She shook her head. "Okay let's make a deal, when we're in LA, my turf, I pay but when we're in New York, your turf, you pay."
"Alright sounds good to me." She gave in, both of them couldn't say no to each other. Besides, Zac would probably pay in New York too, he knew a thing or two about getting Nikki to fold.
"I knew you'd see it my way." He smirked.
"Well your charm is just so irisistible what else can I do?"
"I don't know baby doll but I say just hold on for the ride, cause it's going to be an attractive one." He winked at her and she cracked up. "What? It will."
"I can't believe you just said that!" She started to pretend to have trouble breathing. "I...can't breathe...there's no room with your ego."
"Eh don't worry with the Jonas Brothers taking my crazed fans, it will deflate." He shrugged.
"Oh, are you threatened by three fifteen your old boys?"
"Nah, I'm grateful, they're now considered hotter than me." Nikki mock gasped. "I know right, people are crazy but that means less fan girls writing to me asking me if I can marry them."
"You never did reply to my proposal." She pouted.
"Well that letter must have been lost in the mail because I think I would have, if you included a picture."
"Eh I'll try that when I ask the Jonas Brothers." She smirked. "They're hotter anyway."
"I'll pretend I didn't hear that."
Later that night Zac got home and picked up his phone to return his promise to Vanessa. He had no idea what to say to her, he has just spent the whole afternoon flirting with Nikki, hell he even agreeded to marry her and now he had to call his girlfriend who he had no idea how he felt for anymore.
"Zac, I'm so glad you called...I was getting you wouldn't." He could tell she had been crying.
"You okay V?" He asked.
"No." She choked. "I just feel like I'm losing you and I don't know what to do about it Zac...it's not your fault but it still hurts."
"Vanessa....I...I'm sorry you're hurting but what can I do?"
"Just forgive me and we can move on and be the couple we were again Zac." He sighed. He couldn't, he didn't love Vanessa and he knew he loved Nikki but Vanessa seemed so broken and genuinely sorry. Nikki was his best friend too, and as much as he loved her, he couldn't ruin that by telling her.
"I forgive you V." He said. He was going to stay safe with Vanessa...he always stayed safe.
"Thank you Zac, I love you."
"Bye Vanessa, I'll talk to you tomorrow." He hung up. He was going to stay with her but he sure as hell wouldn't say he loved her. The truth was, he was scared of taking a chance with Nikki who was too good for him anyway. She deserved someone who wasn't afraid to step up and be with her.
Back at Vanessa's she hung up the phone and grinned.
"That went well." She said to herself then turned when there was a knock on her door.
"You wanted to talk V, let's talk." Ashley said.
"Ashley, you're my best friend and I don't want to lose you." She began, if she could get Zac to think she was sorry, she could fool Ashley too. "I'm sorry, you were right, Zac was right, I was drunk and I was a bitch."
"Yeah you sure were."
"I wouldn't blame you if you hated me." She looked down and brought on the tears.
"Vanessa, I don't hate you, I couldn't hate you." She hugged her. "It's okay, just I need to go back to being the old Vanessa, my best friend."
"I promise." The truth was, Vanessa wasn't sorry for what she had done but she needed Zac and Ashley on her side otherwise she had no one and Vanessa was not going to be alone.
