*dusts off LJ*
I haven't been online for over a week and now I'm horribly behind everything. On the plus side I was able to watch the last two episodes of Heroes back to back.
Jumbled thoughts on "Four Months Ago":
Bob has sneakily become my favorite new character. I'm not sure how he did it but somewhere between shooting down Peter's pleas to visit his family and the look on his face when Niki left the Company I realized how much I like him as a character in his morally grey glory. Him and his twisted relationship with Elle.
BTW, how did you read that look he gave Niki? And why on earth did they let Niki leave if she carries the deadly mutated virus?
Best parts of the episode were the flying scenes and the character development they gave Peter. It helped me a great deal to reconcile amnesiac, numb and lethargic Peter with his former S1 self. His transformation was not so much caused by outer influences like the Company brainwashing or experimenting on him but rather from the psychological fallout of Kirby Plaza. Now it also makes sense why amnesiac Peter was so convinced he was bad, he really hated himself during those four months for what he did to Nathan. It's also a bit scary how much of fandom characterizations become canon: Masochistic, kinky, (sexually) manipulative Peter? Check.
My thoughts on "Cautionary Tales" are all over the place because it was just so freaking awesome.
Elle
Elle had great scenes; they have given her much more depth this episode and the reveal about her brain damage leaves the backdoor open for a redemption, I guess. I especially loved her furious look when she zapped West and the vulnerability she showed after Noah planted that seed of doubt in her mind.
Claire
I’m a bit sad we don’t see Claire and Noah working through their issues. Noah’s sacrifice and their reunion last season only roughly bridged the gap between them and this episode showed how much mistrust and issues there are still left. Now I fear that once Claire learns her father is alive (or a zombie) these problems will be pushed back once again because Claire feels so guilty about her role in his death.
Mohinder
The image that's staying with me is not HRG's death, but Mohinder kneeling in front of Bennet, holding his nose and the fear in his eyes. That has to be my new favorite Mohinder/Sendhil scene. So freaking intense.
As usual I find myself reacting contrary to fandom's reactions because I'm not hating Mohinder after this episode. In fact, I never felt more for him. Though I have to admit that I don't know yet how to feel about the actual shooting scene. The built up to this confrontation was marvelous and I expected Mohinder to be the one to shoot him but somehow I wished it was more... urgent? For him actually committing murder and not say, just harm Bennet, I hoped he would be in a situation where he was more edged on than by "just" wanting to protect Bob, Elle and the Company.
It would have felt more natural in the previous confrontation but perhaps I'm just making excuses. I wished the writers gave him a little more justification for actually committing murder for the first time. On the other hand it wouldn't have made him a better human to just watch HRG-I-only-care-for-my-family kill Bob and Elle without doing anything to interfere. He really was in the worst possible situation.
Matt
Matt's development is definitely interesting - especially so soon after rescuing Molly and standing up to his father. I'm curious if he will pass the test or inevitable repeat his father's mistakes.
But overall I'm really loving that all characters have been flirting with their inner dark side this season. Some of them were seduced by the potential of their powers like Peter having a little too much fun choking Will, Claire's cheerleader prank, Hiro not caring for the space-time continuum and wanting to play God and now Matt. But also powerless characters like Mohinder and Noah were pushed towards morally grey and black actions. The only exception is Nathan who had his moments of weakness already last season although I have no doubt that he is still capable of pulling a HRG when someone threatens his loved ones.
Also: Angela still rules. So much.
Specualtion based on the promo:
I'm both looking forward and dreading the Adam/Peter team up because it's clearly a parallel to Bob and Mohinder. Peter and Mohinder are being manipulated by morally grey/black company figures and convinced they are doing the right thing for the greater good while not realizing the true motivations of their mentors. Mohinder ended up being pitched against HRG and judging from the promos the same will happen with Peter and Hiro.
Giving they way people reacted so violently towards Mohinder this week, I'm better preparing myself for Peter's inevitable decline in fandom's graces. Especially after the beautiful scenes between Hiro and his father which give Hiro more than enough motivation to hunt down Adam and everyone loyal to him - meaning Peter. This has the potential to be rather tragic but contrary to Mohinder Peter has the advantage of having a big brother who is likely to smack some sense into him before he is killing someone on his quest to save the world from the virus.
TPTB made up a little for the lack of the Petrelli boys this episode with this awesome easter egg from this week's online comic:
Crispy Brothers:
I'm still impressed that Milo is able to carry Adrian.
Now off to catch up with everything I missed.
