things that are amusing me

In the latest PC Cast novel (time traveling/goddess inclusive romance shenanigans, iffy on the caliber of writing, but often HILARIOUS), one of the lead characters is black, dies, and gets reincarnated into the body of a white 18 year old and promptly (upon seeing her newly white skin) starts freaking out and insisting that she's gone to hell.

It's...well. It's making me laugh A LOT.

Gems!

"I'm white!" Jacqueline sprang to her feet, staring down at her new body. "Oh, Jesus god-fucking-bless America! Jesus! Jesus! I feel faint! My heart! Kat! I'm dying!" She reached out blindly and Kat hurried to her side, gripping her hand.

"You're not dying. We're dreaming. That's all."

"Why in the goddamn hell would I dream I'm white?"

and then:

"Oh, god! We're dead!" Kat said.

"We're dead and I'm white!" Jacky said. "This just can't be right. I was sure I was going to heaven."

and:

"Again, I would like to ask, what is so terrible about being white?" Athena said.

"Nothing, if you are white," Jacky said. "But I'm not." She sighed. "Or at least I wasn't before I went to hell."

It's problematic like burning, but the freaking out is making me laugh a lot.

(This is largely because one of the very very wrong popslash fics I wanted to write, oh so many years ago, involved Justin and Nelly switching bodies and Nelly having essentially the same freakout while Justin did a little dance of glee. I'm sure you can figure out why I didn't ever write the story, even though it makes me laugh even now just to think about it.)

eta: also, I have to put a plug in for Amanda Quick novels. They are problematic in a lot of ways too and the writing is pretty crap, but they are really queer friendly. At least 3 of the books I've read have had long-term lesbian couples, one had a gay scotland yard inspector, and there's a whole club of crossdressing women (one of the lesbian couples belongs to this group) running around some of the more recent ones.
