Some people let me know that they couldn't hear my voice post too well. I'll just start from the beginning, then.
I woke up one morning with some bites on my hip-- about 6 of them. The 7th one is on my foot. I knew about the bites on my hip, and did my best not to scratch, but I started scratching my foot (sticking my hand into my sock) and found out there was a bite there. A bite that blistered and then popped. Stuck on some Neosporin and didn't think much else of it.
The bites must have been something with venom-- my reaction to insect venom is not very good, and the mosquito's backwash is usually the worst for me. I put on Mentholatum.
The second day, my hip didn't swell too bad, but I was growing hives around my hip. I figured that was my usual allergic reaction (and it is) so I took some of the medicine I had from getting bitten by a mosquito last time and put it on there. It helped the itching tremendously. It seemed fine.
The third day, I went to morning class and on the underside of my leg, under the kneecap area, I started itching. I didn't think there was anything wrong, but as soon as I saw little red dots, I knew that something else was going on. Later that evening, at the studio, I noticed that my stomach started getting these same red dots. They were like hives, sort of thing. Another blister on my hip popped, and I tended to that one, too.
When I walked home, I noticed even more showed up on my stomach. I was very itchy everywhere.
I e-mailed my parents photos of what happened, and they told me to see a doctor. I was going to see one, too, because if it was only my hip, then I would have thought it was the same as usual, but this time it started going in areas that weren't bitten. I thought perhaps it was an allergic reaction to the venom, but it doesn't make sense that it's so far away from the source. I couldn't have seen a doctor earlier because of class and deadlines.
Yesterday morning, I woke up for class (9AM), went to it, and right at the beginning of it talked to my instructor. I said that I think I can sit through critiques, but my father thinks I should see a doctor. I showed her my hip, and she said "Your immune system is going crazy! You better get that looked at." And I asked her about critiques, because they're required sessions to go to. She said I wasn't behind and that I could make an appointment with her later.
I took the bus to College 9/10, where the UCSC Health Center is located. I walked in, signed myself in, waited a lot, and finally got to see a doctor. She looked at it, and then looked at my stomach, saying that the bites weren't bites, but they must have been a bacterial infection. (Later, I looked at my photos, and I'm certain the ones on my hips are bites, and that must have been how the bacteria entered, errr, off topic--) She took a swab of my stomach and said they'd grow a bacteria culture and it would take five days.
I must have looked pretty miserable, because she kept trying to joke with me to make me smile or something. "Ahh, those darn doctors, and now I've got a swab on my stomach!" sort of thing.
She then told me that if it got worse, to come in Saturday morning. I might just go regardless, depending. She said that if rash does spread to my entire body, I'd have to go to a hospital.
She gave me a prescription, and seeing how it was 10:40AM, decided it would be all right to pick up medicine. I skipped my only class for the day already, so I rode the bus downtown.
I originally went to the pharmacy on campus, but they would not allow my insurance to pay for most of my medicine. I got to Longs Drugs downtown, gave them my prescription, and the woman there said that there would be a problem. She said that the doctor wrote a number of pills per day and it didn't match up to the number of days she specified. She said I had to call my doctor to reply to it, or else Longs Drugs would do it for me but who knows how long that'll be.
I left Longs Drugs and did some art shopping while waiting for the other two medicines that were properly specified (I had a total of 4-- Benedryl at night was one of them and it's over the counter)... picked up my two medicines and found out that they still couldn't get a hold of her.
It was really troublesome, I didn't have her number on me. I called Elizabeth, knowing she'd be back around this time (It's 12PM now) and somehow she wasn't there. I called and called and each time her roommate picked up, and finally I broke in and asked her roommate for the favor I was going to ask her. I asked if they could find me the Health Center's number, and she gave it to me.
Called the Health Center, asked for my doctor, and they said she was on lunch break. I left a message.
Elizabeth called me back because she said her roommate said it sounded urgent. I told her what happened so far, and the prescription problem. I told her that it'll be really annoying to ride back home, and then get called, and then ride the bus back downtown. I was tempted to stay downtown, but I really have nothing to do there. Elizabeth then offered me a ride in her car to pick up the last medicine, so I rode the bus back to campus.
They hadn't eaten yet (Ron, Liz, Linda, Lyssette) so I went with them to the dining hall. By now, it's 2PM. I still don't have a call back from my doctor, so I walk away from the table and call. Lunch break is not that long. I ask to be directed to her line, and once again I'm left with someone telling me to leave a message.
A little worried, but it was okay. About half an hour later, my doctor finally calls me and the call is very choppy. All I heard was "Hello" and "inscription done." I assumed she said "prescription done"...
I called in Longs Drugs just to make sure, and they did have my medicine ready. The medicine I was waiting for was the most important one-- the antibiotic. And on it it says it has to be taken with lots of water, avoid being in the sun or artificial sunlight... and my other one said that I'd be dizzy and might be drowsy. Oh joy, hopefully none of that happens, I thought.
Walked to the West Remote parking lot (they're not kidding when they call it remote) with Elizabeth and she took me downtown. Picked up my medicine, and we headed back to campus. Parked at the North Remote (another remote area, sigh) and walked back to my apartment.
It's 5PM now. I take the antibiotic. I started on my laundry-- I was told to change clothes often and wash my laundry. I didn't only do that, I wanted to wash my bedsheets. Here's why: a weekend or so ago, my parents came to visit me and gave me this colorful blanket. They put it as my bedsheet and I slept on top of it for at least a good week. The thing I didn't know is that it wasn't washed before given to me-- normally my mom washes it, but what I think happened is that my aunt washed it and stuck it in a bag, and it's been sitting at her house for ages until she gives it to my mom. Something like that. My mom also gave me a yellow blanket to sleep on, and that one she did wash for sure.
So I took everything down. My thoughts on the bedsheet not being washed (I called my mom about it the third day, evening) led me to believe something in the bedsheets must have bitten me and it must have been dirty.
I washed clothes, bedsheets, everything. I had a total of four loads going at once in the coin-op laundry room.
It took me hours and hours to re-set my bed, and by now it's 9PM. I still didn't finish folding my clothes. I also didn't eat dinner, so I ate something. My hands are shaking a lot. I figure because my size is kind of small, and the medicine must have been more than enough. I start thinking about how maybe I got the bacteria through the bite on my foot. I started getting a reaction on that leg sooner than my stomach, so yes. It must be like that...
Finished folding my clothes, now it's 12AM. I'm sick and I'm tired. I try to go to sleep, and wake up a ton.
Today. I wake up and it's time for class, but I don't feel up to going, so I skip. I get up and take my antibiotic, and the dizzy/drowsy medicine, and put on the cream. I call around to see if anyone was around for lunch, but decide to go there on my own. Put on a hoodie to cover myself from the sun and noticed that even walking to the dining hall, my nose started to feel like the sun was burning me. Ate food, and came back. Started writing this. And throughout the whole thing, I am as itchy as htdtrdekuhlkjgrsfea.
I feel really dizzy, kind of groggy, and generally disoriented. I've never taken so much medicine at once. And now the sun burns me! I am a vampire. I also feel like some huge force is changing my body, so I'm trembling a lot. Medicine is a weird thing. But I'm okay, really. I'm sure it'll go away by tomorrow morning or at least improve...
