She talks about her mother, the accountant.
Some of you have already heard this story, but...
Oh, man, johan_g's comment just reminded me of it all over again, and I just want to share it to those who haven't heard it.
My mother went to school in Taiwan, because, well, she was born and raised there... to go to the accounting school in Taiwan is pretty difficult, because to graduate, you need two things. One, to excel at using the abacus, and two, to get 100% or something crazy like that to graduate.
...and my mom has a degree from there, so, I'm pretty sure she got just about 100%. I think she's just that good at accounting, because I've actually seen her do tons of calculations all in her head, and I'm just thinking, AM I REALLY RELATED TO YOU? ...anyway.
So anyway, upon her moving to the U.S., that degree is... well, moot. Nothing! So she had to go to a community college to try and get a degree that was recognized.
She went and took classes, and always got great grades in all the classes she needed. Except one.
This one had students that made fun of her use of the abacus (saying it was backwards and not accurate) and the instructor shared the same sentiment. She still had all the right answers, though! So how could it have been inaccurate? She told the instructor and the rest of the students that she could easily do just as well as a calculator using her abacus-- and be just as fast--if not faster!
And so, at the end of the term, they set up a huge problem... and the instructor vs. my mother. Mom was fitted with the abacus, and the instructor with a calculator...
They calculated, calculated, and calculated, and my mom finished pretty quickly! Everyone was amazed at the speed she was calculating at (believe me, I am amazed myself, still, each time I see it) and she finished it accurately. The instructor finished as well, using the calculator, and had a larger margin of error than she did... amazing.
...well, that sure showed the instructor and students huh? Pretty awesome feat, mom.
That is, until she got her grades. 'A' in everything except 'calculator' skill. That... she got a C.
Oh man.
I wonder if I should share the Pepsi story of my brother sometime... hee hee...
