Sheemie is downstairs, with the kitten on his shoulder.

The call is stronger than it was yesterday, so much stronger, and the song grows louder by the hour.

And he knows.

They go today.

Last chance to say goodbye, folken.

Jah-lila picks her way between the tables and chairs until she reaches the human with the tiny pard on his shoulder. She lets out a soft whinny as she approaches.

Sheemie looks up at the sound, and moves to meet her.

Jah-lila dips her head in greeting. "Hail," she says quietly. "How is it with you and yours?"

He doesn't need to explain much to her.

"The call grows stronger."

Jah-lila nods; she's seen it often enough.

"Swift running to you, then, and light sleeping and far seeing, until the light of Alma's thousand jeweled eyes see you safely home."

"Thankee-sai." He reaches to lift the kitten from his shoulder, in cupped hands. "Would'ee...?"

Jah-lila nods. "Of course," she says, and goes down on one knee so that Capi can be set more easily on her back.

Sheemie sets the kitten down carefully, giving him a final stroke before he takes his hand away.

His eyes are bright.

Jah-lila straightens carefully, nuzzling the kitten briefly before turning to nose at Sheemie's shoulder. Among her own people, a comforting gesture would have involved pressing shoulder to shoulder, or grooming of the other's coat, but that's not likely to work here.

Not so much.

He runs a hand down her shoulder, in as close as he can come to returning the gesture.
