Claire's behind the bar today. Didn't think she would be? Well, you thought wrong. She's behind the bar and she's already cleaned and straightened everything twice. She looks tired and stressed and generally dissatisfied with life, but that's all par for the course lately ( Read more... )

Barry approaches the Bar, carrying an old record player and an album of Sinatra songs.

"Hey, Claire."

Her tired smile becomes a little bit happier at the sight of her friend and his records. "Hi Barry, how are you?"

"Hanging in there. You know how the Bar gets some days. And you? You seem a bit tired." He puts the record player on the Bar.

"Here you go, as promised last week."

"Thank you," she smiles and nods at the records. "It might be awhile before I can use them though. Sawyer's really sick right now."

She tries to say it as if it's nothing to worry about, but she doesn't quite manage.

"Oh my." Barry can tell what's up immediately.

"Has anyone looked at him? Do you know about the other sick people here?"

"He won't let anybody look at him," she says resentfully. "And yeah, I think it's the same thing. He's got. . a rash or something. Like scales. And a very high fever."

She doesn't mention the hand falling off just yet.

"I'm afraid...I'm afraid they might BE scales. The disease has been causing some ghastly mutations to patrons. Not a huge number so far. But enough to cause much concern.

"To be honest, I'm not sure that having anyone see him will help much. The cause is magical, and until Lady Ako puts together some kind of cure to match, all treatments seem to come up short. But at least the symptoms can be treated temporararily." There is a lot of concern in Barry's voice, tempered by a professional's years of crisis management.

"And how are you feeling?"

She starts to say she's fine but then opts for a little more honesty. "Like I'm tired of having to worry about this sort of thing."

"Welcome to the club. Sara's feeling very stressed. The security staff is. It's just one those things that goes on here far too often.

"I think the expression I've been using is 'freelng Milliways." But feel free to make that stronger if you wish." And Barry offers a bit of a grin.

She laughs ruefully. "I think that about sums it up actually. When I first came here everything seemed so peaceful and just better but now. . ."

"You must have come here on the right day then. Because certainly I feel like I've bounced from hassle to crisis to disaster and back for months now.

"However, for what it's worth, soemone thinks she kows a cure. She just needs to make it. So maybe this will pass before long, and you and Sawyer can get to that dancing." Doe she smile? Sort of. He knows he's pushing it a little.

"I hope so," she says softly, with a matching smile. "So aside from all that is Milliways, how are you? Anything else going on?"

He smirks. "Ah, but if you take away Milliways, all that's left is an old hero in love, or maybe an old hero trying to be a mentor to young heroes. Neither of which are that exciting to anyone but me.

"How's Seth?"

"It's probably also exciting to both the person you're in love with, and the younger heroes, I'd bet."

She smiles and sighs, "And Seth is good. I haven't seen him much the past few days. I don't want to expose him to whatever Sawyer has, anymore than I have to. But he's doing well. He's almost five months old."

"That's smart, keeping him away from the germs. Even if this isn't highly contagious, no point in taking chances.

"As for exciting...

"Well, I am fairly confident that Sara is content, and happy, and most likely excited.

"But as for the young heroes, it's hard to say. Have you met Stephanie Brown yet? She's one of them. She seems to be okay with me, but she's got a lot of baggage and I really don't know if I'm helping yet."

"I haven't," she shakes her head. "I haven't had a chance to meet too many people recently. Where's she from?"
