There's a loud thud on the front door.
Those who are listening carefully can hear someone gasping.
Then there's something that sounds like someone scrabbling for purchase on wood -- looking for any crack or fissure in which to put one's hands to pull the door open.
And low: "There must be someone on the other --"
Now it sounds like someone's fists -- and powerful fists -- are landing on the front door. Over, and over, and over.
Once, there is a gunshot.
Every now and then there's something that sounds as though whatever's on the other side must have given the front door a good kick. This sound is always followed by a muffled curse.
Under all of this -- if one was to listen closely -- is ragged, rapid breathing. Nearly panicked.
