River sits curled up, chin resting on her knees, watching the flames. Orange light flickers off her face, which is relaxed and content. Her mouth is smeared slightly with sticky marshmallow.

Simon, next to her, eyes a s'more rather dubiously.

Simon smiles back, and waves a bit, before turning his attention back to the puzzling confection. The chocolate he recognizes, but the rest of it...?

With an almost visible mental "oh well," he takes a careful bite. And chews thoughtfully, while trying to catch a drip of melted marshmallow with one finger.

A few feet away, a man in a bright red uniform sits next to a wolf. They both watch the flames.

River rests her cheek on her knees, and regards the wolf. She looks interested, not scared.

Dief regards back. He's good at it. He twists his head to the side and blinks at her.

Fraser doesn't really notice.

Simon doesn't seem scared by the wolf either, but that's probably because his brain has catalogued it as "dog."

Fraser notices the second gaze...and smiles pleasantly at them both. Dief gives a light yip and wanders over to River, pushing his head up for petting and skritching.

"Hăo gŏu," River says softly, and stretches out a hand slowly towards the wolf's head.

She doesn't seem to particularly notice his human.

The wolf preens and nudges against her hand. Fraser quirks his head, eyes blinking at the girl.

...It's a rather big dog, though, and Simon looks a little uneasy and moves closer.

"Uh, River, you shouldn't ... that's someone else's dog, and he might not like ... "

River smiles happily, and pets the wolf, scratching behind his ears.

"Likes it," she croons to Dief. "Hăo gŏu."

She still doesn't really look at Fraser. Humans are inherently less interesting and more stressful than large fuzzy animals, most of the time.

Fraser smiles at the two of them, but looks first at Simon.

"Actually, sir, he's a wolf. But he certainly doesn't mind being skritched and I certainly won't stop him from getting some affection from others. He'd be horribly depressed if I did, and a depressed wolf is the last thing I need on my hands."

He grins to River.

"Constable Benton Fraser of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Gāxìng jìandào nĭ."

Simon blinks, and looks just a bit wary. Probably because of the word wolf, and not the word police. Probably.

"Nice to meet you too. I'm, ah, Simon."

"Gāxìng jìandào nĭ," River says. To Dief, but it's probably meant for Fraser as well. Still, her hands tighten a little in his fur, as she pets him, and her eyes dart to Fraser and back to the wolf.

Fraser picks up on the dart of eyes and he decides to turn his attention to Simon. Dief will be fine.

He gets up and settles a little closer to where they're sitting, smiling serenely as he stares at the flames for another moment before looking to Simon.

"Good to meet you, Simon. And...I'm assuming the young woman pampering my wolf is your sister? If I'm wrong, please correct me, but the resemblance is rather telling."
