A couple of days ago, according to Alyx's personal timeline, Sergeant-Major Shephard gave her a crate full of headsets that he claims will allow them to communicate across the dimensional barrier between Earth and the Combine Overworld. He was uncharacteristically cagey about where and how he managed to acquire them, which makes Alyx more than a little suspicious. The fact that they appear to be some form of biotech doesn't help matters either. (The only biotechnology she's familiar with is Combine tech, and the vermifuge that Dr. Solus developed to kill the Gene Worm. Neither of which is something Alyx wants on her face.)
Still, any edge they can get is a good one, so Alyx has been experimenting with the chat interface, testing its limitations and trying to get it to interface with her own computer. She's surprised to find, when she walks into Milliways, that a lot more names are added to the list of available users.
She has yet to make the connection between that and the T-Minus announcement on the bulletin board. That's probably a good thing for everyone involved.
