"Pony!" cries a small voice.

The voice is accompanied by rapid footsteps. Soon, a toddler in a chef costume comes running up, clearly aiming to hug one of Twilight Sparkle's legs.

"Pony!" he says again. "Pony!"

A woman, presumably his mother, is following behind him with a cauldron-shaped candy pail. She is not in costume but is wearing a Halloween-ish shirt.

Some ponies are good with children. This pony? Not so much. She tries to step back away from the oncoming toddler, but the cape is in the way.

Don't worry. Mom's catching up.

"Cepheus, slow down," Mia says, reaching and taking his hand.

"Pony, Mama!" he says, pointing at Twilight Sparkle with his free hand.

"Yes, that is a pony, sweetheart. But we don't want to scare her."

Twilight puts on a very forced, nervous smile. "Uh... hi?"

"Hello," Mia says before picking her son up. "Sorry. He gets really excited sometimes."

"Ponyyyyyyyyyyy," Cepheus says, reaching his tiny arms out.

"Cepheus, that's not polite," she tells him, gently taking his arms back.

"How old is he?" asks Twilight, her curiosity overcoming her nervousness.

"He'll be 20 months tomorrow, some over a year and a half. His name is Cepheus and my name is Mia."

"I cook," Cepheus suddenly declares, his hands on his hat.

"You do? --oh, I'm Twilight Sparkle," she adds as an afterthought.

"Yah," Cepheus says.

"We do let him help in the kitchen where he can," Mia clarifies. "We could've left him messy from upsetting a bag of flour on his head this morning and it would've been a suitable ghost costume."

"Pamcake," the child says, joining his mother's conversation.

"We were making pancakes, weren't we?"

"Mmmmmmm."

He rubs at his tummy while he makes the yummy noise.

Twilight can't help but smile at that. "Sounds like that time Apple Bloom helped Pinkie Pie make cupcakes..."

Now that's an interesting thing. Baking without thumbs. Or fingers.

"Are Apple Bloom and Pinkie Pie ponies, too?" Mia can't help but ask.

"Of course," says Twilight. "I'd never met any humans before I came here."

"You hadn't? Wow, we must seem strange, then."

Mia giggles a little and scratches the back of her head with the arm not holding Cepheus.

"But I'm used to being strange anyway since most humans here come from Earth. Cepheus's father included."

And in fact, Mia is wearing her shirt from the Halloween before last: a maternity shirt with an alien printed on the belly.

But back to the question at hoof.

"But how are you able to bake cupcakes without hands?"

"How do you walk on only two legs? We just do."

[gorgonfondness]

"I guess you've got a point," she says, not fully satisfied with that answer but not really expecting anything more after that finality. "I'm sorry if I seem rude. I've just never met a pony who could bake cupcakes before."

Cepheus is now reaching for his candy pail, for he knows there are goodies inside and they're all for him.

"Hey, don't you have to give some of that to Nightmare Moon first?"
