Smugness is a terribly unbecoming emotion, even if it is a perfectly reasonable response to seeing somebody kicked in the pants who richly deserves it. That is in no small part why Gordon Freeman pleaded the need to change out of the HEV suit, sought out a small room in an obscure part of the Resistance base they were visiting, and used the door there to come to Milliways. He can be smug here all he wants and nobody will call him out on it.
Well, okay, maybe they will, but it won't hurt morale on either side back home, is the important thing.
One physicist in a battered orange-and-grey HEV suit coming in; one in an MIT t-shirt and jeans coming down the stairs in search of a beer fifteen minutes later, having showered and changed. Feel free to bother him at either point in time, it's all good.
