On the ever-changing status of Tavi's chi, incidentally, Kitai's counterweight is still there--and his own is starting to shift, start to balance out on its own.

But the look in his eyes is far different, a little urgent. I have a cover, this needs to be a hell of a lot quieter, crows let me give you my cover before it gets broken, someone from home might turn up.
It is possible that his life is overly complicated.

It takes him a little longer than normal, and when he comes back up and pours the wine with a relaxed smile, he pushes it over to Seimei on a napkin. His eyes flick down, once, and he nods slightly. "--and I'll be right with you, another moment."
He uses the excuse of another order to let Seimei read it. On the inside is a message: I'm with the Legions, under a different name. I can't break cover, just in case someone from home turns up. Rufus Scipio, First Aleran. Play it how you like, I'll follow.
He is such a spy.

He can light furylamps; maybe soon he'll be able to handle small things like that. "Have you ever been on a war front?" Not being enlisted somehow hardly means not being there. After all, there are a few thousand camp followers, not to mention the locals. Tavi knows better than to assume that.

And then his face absolutely lights up, a bright smile exactly like the ones a little boy used to have relaxing his entire expression. "Except for the worship--which I still don't fully understand," he adds, "that... actually sounds like home."
It's what he gets for living in a world with Pokémon.
