The mountain on the far side of the lake throws back definite echoes of the shots fired at the range. Sunshine certainly hears them.

She'd started taking her daily run around the lake shore earlier in the day, after meeting so many people the first time she'd done so. The sunlight isn't as strong in the mornings as it is at noon when she had been taking her run, but it still holds that delightful promise of the day still to come.

When she rounds the last curve of the lake, heading back towards the bar, she turns aside and heads towards the shooting range, curious.

Ben empties the Glock's last clip, and ejects the magazine.

He tips back the brim of his hat, surveying his handiwork. Not bad, considering the weapon is mostly unfamiliar, but he could certainly improve.

Rae may be mostly unfamiliar with guns, but she isn't stupid. She makes sure to approach from a direction that is nowhere near the direction in which the shooter is aiming, and announces her presence way before she's nearby.

"That target must've done something pret-ty bad to deserve such kali treatment," Rae says, smiling at Ben once she sees it's him.

Turning toward her, he takes out one of his ear plugs, and returns her smile in kind.

"Well, good mornin' to you, too."

Rae is in purple sweatpants and yellow tank-top. She had slowed enough in her approach so she's not breathing hard, but it's pretty clear that she's been running the last half-hour or so.

"Definitely," she agrees, chuckling. It has been a good morning. "So far, at least. How about you?"

"I certainly can't complain," he says, gesturing toward the fun he's been having.

"Are you runnin' around out here for business, or pleasure?"

"Eh," she says, tilting a hand back and forth. "Bit of both. It's a good way to help put one's thoughts in order."

And it goes without saying that she needs to be as fast as she can be, against enemies who are by nature impossibly fast.

"What about you?" Rae nods to the glock. She has never been a fan of Western movies (sorry, Ben), but she's pretty sure that modern handguns didn't often feature in them.

"I'm just keepin' sharp, and havin' a ball. Playin' with all these toys I never get a chance to at home."

He cracks a quick, teasing half-smile.

"I've found it's a good way for me to get my thoughts in order, from time to time."

"If you were to take those back with you and you could change the history of the world," she shakes her head, eyeing the guns as she approaches. "A new spin on 'how the West was won.'"

"Could," he says, his expression bleeding toward thoughtful. "But the way I've heard tell, messin' around with time and ingenuity like that might have consequences I couldn't hope to predict."

Which isn't to say Ben doesn't entertain the notion at times, in his more reflective moments.

"Yeah," she says, rueful. "Even if a modern gun in your time didn't mess with things too badly, it'd give some dusty, twenty-first century historian a heart-attack."

And that'd be mean.

"That one's a Glock, right? I'm not really familiar with guns." Nor really much of anything useable as a weapon, apart from a knife and an electric cherry-pitter

He nods.

"Fascinatin' piece of work - it's mostly plastic, as near as I can gauge."

His eyes flick to the Glock, and back to Sunshine.

"Do bullets do any good against your vampires?"

"It's a perennial topic of debate on the globenet discussion boards," Rae replies. "But I've never heard of a person successfully shooting a vampire."

"The only metal that'll... you know, work... is wrought iron, anyway."

Ben lets globenet discussion boards run right past his ears without comment, in the name of a much more pressing matter.

"Wrought iron," he echoes, thoughtful.

"I reckon you could get made-to-order iron bullets - surely somebody around here could smith 'em."

"I'm..." Rae shakes her head. "A gun wouldn't work. Even if it worked on vampires, it wouldn't work. Not for me."

Because her SOFs were already overworked trying to keep her from getting too much attention from their higher-ups. Sunshine suddenly carrying a gun would not only cause them to have to show professional interest, it'd mean the straight cops would, too.

Even if she successfully hid it from everyone. What if she had to use it? Apart from potentially slowing her down enough that she dies from the bullet not working, Old Town is a neighborhood that reacts to hearing screams.

How much more would it react to hearing gunshots?

Still, Ben's thought was a kind one, and Rae is grateful for it, all the same. "Not really in a baker's arsenal, is it, a gun?"

"Maybe not the average baker's," he says, giving her a knowing half-smile. "But I don't think you've ever been close to approximatin' that."
