Oh dear, that's not good.

Guppy jumps over a sofa and crouches next to the woman, feeling for a pulse.

"Can you hear me?"

She can, and as it's not a deep faint, Mary finds her way back to full consciousness fairly quickly.

To find a strange young man with his hand at her throat.

Still somewhat disoriented, Mary's hands go flailing at the unwelcome intrusion, making her look not unlike someone who is being attacked by a wasp.

Guppy pulls his hand away quickly.

"It's okay, I'm a doctor." he says. "Are you all right?"

A doctor? Since when do doctors take part in abductions?

Unless the last few moments were all just the product of imagination. Perhaps she was stricken with a fever?

But a quick look at her surroundings tells her that this is not, in fact, the case.

Mary pushes herself up to sitting, and one flailing hand finds her sister's curling iron, which she raises and points like a pistol.

"You...you...send me home at once!"

Guppy puts his hands up.

"You can just go back through that door. I take it you're new..."

He asks a passing waitrat to get the poor girl a glass of water.

"I'm Guppy, what's your name?"

"There is no...."

She's about to say door, but Mary is then distracted by the servant-rat that the man so calmly asks for water.

What kind of unholy place is this?

"My name is no concern of yours," she says after a moment (after she's regrouped).

"I'm not going to hurt you." Guppy says, sitting back.

"You're in a place called Milliways Bar. It picks people up through different doors in their worlds."

Doctor or no, right now he seriously lacks credibility in Mary's eyes.

"I don't care what this place is called. I want to go home."

"Return me at once or...or....my father will call out the militia."

All right, so it's probably not the militia's official job, but what good are they if they are incapable of rescuing a respectable young lady?

"Can you see that door?" Guppy asks, pointing at the door.

"People sometimes get stuck here, but they usually get back in the end."

Mary turns, hoping for all she's worth that the door is indeed back. But no such luck.

"Are you mad? There's nothing there but a wall."

Nerves and upset always did make her a bit testy.

"And what do you mean, stuck?"

"I'm not mad."

Guppy gets up and opens the door to his world.

"This is my door."

Through it, if she's able to see, is his landing with a large black cat on it.

He shuts the door.

"Were you able to see that?"

Mary stares.

She saw it. Saw him open a door in a blank wall and close it again.

And a black cat, of all ominous omens. Or Mary would consider it an ominous omen, were she of a superstitious bent.

How very quickly one succumbs.

"Well then.....open mine. Open mine and I'll go home and tell no one about this."

"I can't open yours. We can only open our own."

Mary stares at the blank wall, her lips pressed thinly together.

Possibly to prevent herself from betraying the true extent of her distress.

"What am I meant to do?" she asks.

If she is not allowed to leave.

"Well... I can get you a cup of tea to start with, if you want? Then see about finding you a room."

Beat.

"If you're not going to tell me your name, what should I call you?"
