The Fourth of a July is a complex holiday when you're out on the frontier and the scars of the Civil War are new. William got into a brief scuffle with another boy about his father and the War while his mother entered a contest with one of her pies. Mark didn't cough as much but they all were thinking about leaving soon.
The only thing was they couldn't go home yet since Bisbee was small enough that being at the celebration until it was almost dark and the dancing started was what you did. William was happy to spot the Bar when he was going into the schoolhouse to see how bad his damage from the fight was, hopefully his mother wouldn't worry too much.
There's a nice bruise forming on his cheek and smiling hurts as he sits down at the counter and is presented with a cupcake with an American flag on it, a root beer float and an ice pack, "Thank you, Bar."
