Fools and Fire

Jul 01, 2011 22:25

The sky is dark without a moon and only the stars glimmer give a tiny bit of light casting the world into shadows and more shadows. The lake glistens like a mirror reflecting the stars and near the edge was the Fool. He's gotten a bonfire going and is standing besides it watching the flames flicker ( Read more... )

"What is this that you are cooking? Tofu?" She sniffs at the bag of marshmallows.

She can be unintentionally stealthy sometimes.

He jumps slightly at her sudden appearance. "Oh, hello again!" the Fool smiles at her. "What's Tofu?"

"Some tasteless, bland foodstuff used to attract Penance creatures. I think it is made of some type of bean." She picks out a marshmallow and comments, "but this smells of sugar... And is squishy."

"Penance creatures?"

He takes a marshmallow and sticks it onto a stick before sticking it into the fire. There's a lot of sticking going on there. "It's a marshmallow. They're practically pure sugar."

"Oh, it some name that the Fremmenik tribe have for certain pests that have been trying to establish themselves on my world for millenia. They think that killing the creatures is their duty and penance. Bless their hearts, they are such a responsible people." Dependable, too, when something 'sinful and unnatural' needs to be burned down.

She tears her marshmallow in two, to see if the spongy consistency is the same throughout. "Huh... and you cook these?"

"That sounds terribly responsible of them. The creatures mustn't have much in the way of taste if they're attracted to this bland tasteless stuff."

He pulls the marshmallow, slightly singed, from the fire. "You can, or you can eat them plain."

She eats the marshmallow, then decides to try cooking one. "Do you have any spare skewers?"

"I've just got some sticks." He passes her the stick he was using. It's polite to let the ladies have yours and you get another one.

"Thanks," she says as she takes another marshmallow and impales it.

When the Fool looks back after selecting a stick for himself, he will find that the marshmallow is already on fire, mysteriously.

He stares and then laughs, delighted. "Oh that's fantastic! But I think you over cooked it!"

"It does burn quite nicely, though," Well, until the outside is blackened and the fire goes out. "Hmm, well, that is disappointing."

She pokes open the outer shell with a finger, yelps in surprise at the hot melted contents, then sticks the burned finger in her mouth.

"Mmm, dis ish gud."

"It does, but it doesn't taste so good burned," he says. He gets a marshmallow and sticks it into the fire waiting until it's perfectly golden brown and pulls it out.

The charred outside might add something to the sweet gooey inside.

No it doesn't, it's like sprinkling charcoal on your food.

She eats the marshmallow anyway then starts preparing another marshmallow for a proper roasting this time. No fire magic.

Yeah, fire magic isn't the best when it comes to roasting marshmallows unless you know you're either very good with it or like charcoal.

He chews on his happily. "It's good with chocolate too."

She's good with fire, but she's good with power, not finesse. She has never had much use for it.

She is probably holding the marshmallow to far away from the hot parts of the fire.

"Chocolate? Hmm... More sugar?"

"Yes, more sugar, but I don't have any chocolate on me." The Fool tends towards subtly. It's easy to be foolish and subtly, that way people don't always realized they're being fooled.
