There are good smells coming from the kitchen of the bar. Cinnamon rolls and mysterious chocolate things. Rae tugs off her apron and hangs it on the hook beside the door before stepping out into the sunlight, stretching. Summer in pseudo-Scotland is cooler than in New Arcadia, but the sun is no less bright.
She's got twenty minutes before the cinnamon rolls will be ready to come out of the oven. Her daily run around the lake shore should be well-within that time.
Surely.
Except that less than three minutes later, she suddenly comes across this hulking, ten-ton flying monster in her path, and skids to a startled stop. "What the-"
Appa snuffles on the ground and gets a big nosefull of DELICIOUS SMELLS coming from the direction of Rae. He lifts his head, sniffs again, and then lumbers towards her to investigate.
This'd be Rae backing up very quickly. She hadn't met anything dangerous out in the woods, apart from the occasional demon rabbit, but she supposes there's a first time for everything. Time to get out of here fast.
If only a contrary tree root (there's always a well-placed tree-root) hadn't caught her foot, tripping her. She goes down.
Appa continues his slow and methodical approach, until he is leaning directly over her. There's one more sizable sniff, before he opens his gigantic mouth....and licks her.
Is it a greeting? Or is it a warning of chewing to come?
All that she gets out is a loud "EEP!" (that she would steadfastly deny if anyone were to reference it in the future) before being licked.
Wait.
Terrifying as that is, it's not the mangled death she was expecting. More like... being tackled and licked by a friendly dog. A huuuuge friendly dog, or whatever this is. Something like that.
Sunshine is trying to clean sky-bison spit off her face at the same time as gingerly extricating herself from under the huge, apparently-friendly creature.
"Uh... hi," she says, managing a wry smile but still slightly shaken by her encounter. "He yours?"
Once Appa backs up enough, Rae gets to her feet again. Her skin glimmers faintly, though more from the light-web set into her skin than the light coating of bison-saliva.
"What... what is he, if you don't mind me asking?" She's never seen anything like it. ...And why does the kid's tattoos match the bison's arrow?
Appa hrumphs again at Sunshine. There's a look about him that gives the indication that he may try to lick her again at some point in the very near future.

"Appa? Where'd you go? Appa?"
The great beast raises and lowers its tail, resulting in a rather loud thump on the ground.
"Appa!" The boy comes running over.
"Oh...hi."

He turns his attention towards the bison, who grudgingly complies. "Back up, buddy."

"Appa's a sky bison."
The bison hrumphs in agreement.

Before very gingerly reaching up to pat Appa's furred cheek. "Hello there, Appa. Nice to meet you."
"I'm Sunshine."

"We're pleased to meet you, Sunshine. I'm Aang."

"Are you two new around here?" Rae would've noticed the sky-bison, she's sure.

An actual nomad, that is. She's not about to mention that 'nomad' is a word often used as slang in her world for shifty, deceitful behavior.
"I'm a baker."

Then he turns to Appa, and shakes his head.
"Really? Because you haven't had enough to eat already?"
"I'm sorry Appa knocked you down, but he probably smelled your kitchen on you. His nose is really good, and he has four stomachs to fill so...yeah."
