Munch is one of those people who doesn't go in for Father's Day. After all, if your father had made you the target of his constant physical and verbal abuse and then took the coward's way out by committing suicide, you wouldn't want to honor the man, either ( Read more... )

Did someone say Daddy issues? 'Cause here's Jack, approaching the bar now that he's seen someone standing behind it.

Jack reads the specials board, stares at it for a moment with a twist of his mouth, then signals Munch.

Munch nods, wiping his hands on a convenient rag. "What can I get you?"

"Whiskey, thanks," Jack says with a nod. "Busy so far?"

"Not yet." He pulls out a glass and a bottle of whiskey, fills the glass and then slides it towards Jack. "But then, the night's still young."

Munch doesn't put the whiskey bottle away just yet, just in case.

Yeah, Jack'll probably be wanting a refill.

"Especially considering the way time works in this place. Hard to say a Sunday night in here would be slower than a Friday, considering people can come in here from any day of the week in their world."

"This is true," the detective agrees. "Hell, in some places it's probably not even June."

"It's late March, where I came in from," Jack says, taking a long sip of his drink. "Confusing, but not always a bad thing. It's always summer somewhere."

"Just like it's always five o'clock somewhere?"

Jack gives Munch a wry smile. "Exactly, and that one's especially true in here. Not that the time of day makes much of a difference in here, either. It's not like this place has a closing time."

"Aside from the one Big One," Munch can't help remarking. "It could just be that the Door isn't opening onto very many places today."

"Could be. I'd say that it could be a number of people don't happen to be coming in a stable door in their world, either, but if the bar really wanted them in here, I'm sure one would pop up."

Jack's mouth twitches in another wry smile. "Guess the infinite times and places leading here means you can't count on holidays being quiet in here at first, then having a flood of people needing a drink after dealing with relatives."

"And we wonder why Bar takes a break every night and lets somebody else do the work," Munch adds.

Who could really blame her?

"Yeah," Jack says, taking another sip of his drink, "Though I'd prefer not to get roped into covering again. Everyone should have an equal opportunity to serve."

He's only partly kidding.

The older man shrugs. "I don't mind helping out so much. Reminds me of working at the Waterfront."

"You've bartended in your world?" Jack asks. "Though depending what your world's like, the clientele's got to be a little different."

He nods. "One of my obligations as part owner of the place," he answers.

The other comment earns Jack a shrug. "Only a little. And at least I didn't run the risk of being turned into a puppet."
