Mel Fray / in the rafters

May 24, 2011 13:30

Mel is dangling from the underside of one of the rafters, holding a knife between her teeth. Which she occasionally takes out, to rub at the wood, during which time she jams a steel wire sponge into her pocket.

If you happen to be close, you might hear her muttering.

"When was the last time anyone tried to clean this, goddamn dried on... is that ( Read more... )

Dixie raises an eyebrow as she watches Mel operate. She already knows that this is an odd place, and that knowledge drives her next question. "Pudding in the rafters? Is that part of your floor show?"

"Not part of my floor show," Mel mutters, before she even looks.

Another new face. Huh.

"Some people eat up here. I guess that kinda accounts for it."

"I can't say I blame them. I do love heights. And danger." Dix hasn't been up in the rafters yet, but with the way her life goes it's not out of the realm of possibility. "So you own the establishment?"

"No," Mel says cheerfully. "I just live here. An' I'm on Security."

"I'm not surprised they let the bouncers board here," Dixie admits, jumping to a conclusion and coming a little closer so she won't end up with a crick in her neck. "Does it get rough around these parts?"

"Sometimes," Mel says mildly. She stops work in order to hang upside down and get closer to a normal conversation. "All the superpowers, all the egos, they clash. I try and keep the actual getting hurt to a minimum."

The upside-down hanging causes Dixie's brow to fork. She's worked with contortionists, but this is a new one on her. "Pain spoils all the fun, unless you like that sort of thing." She pats her curls. "I can't imagine the trouble you must go through. Why, today I saw a man who must have been six foot nine with armor dotted in spikes."

"Urquhart?" Mel guesses, tilting her head. If makes her hair do weird things.

"I didn't quite catch his name," she confesses. "I was too busy keeping a spitting distance from him in case he decided to take hostages."

"He won't," Mel says confidently.

"Or if he does, give me a yell and I'll get him to quit it."

"Oh, I promise I will," Dixie says. "I'm the kind of gal who can handle herself, but I'm not crazy."

"See, that's where we differ," Mel says cheerfully. "I'm crazy enough to try anyone, they annoy me."

She tilts an impressed eyebrow. "If the world didn't have people wild enough to keep the peace we'd be in a fix." Mel reminders her of Brisco in a few levels, which is, of course, a good thing in Dixie's book. "What's the biggest mess you've had to clean up here?"

"There was this big shadow thing a f ew years back that made everyone try and kill everyone else," Mel says, her smile disappearing into a scowl.

"Mind fucks. I hate 'em."

Her eyes widen. "Shadow thing?" She rests a hand on her hip. "If something's going to bump me in the night, I'd rather a friendly stranger than a monster. How did you get rid of it?"

"It had light as a weakness," Mel replies easily. "Just got a buncha people with light powers to round it up."

Mostly her, as she remembers. There was a lot of Phoenix that night.
