Out back there is a man shouting at a large, blue box.

"Donna! Come on!"

"I am not walking into some grubby little space pub!" comes a muffled reply, presumably from inside.

"But it's at the end of the universe!"

"You promised me wonders of creation, not beer and chips!"

"Just come and have a look!"

"No!The Doctor throws up his hands and ( Read more... )

There is a not'cat up in a nearby tree, chuckling at the Doctor's expense, grinning as he throws up his hands in exasperation.

"She has not yet been introduced to Milliways' famous fried paradoxes, has she?"

It takes the Doctor a second to orient on the source of the voice, but when he spots the flash of white among the branches, he grins. "Not so much. I'll probably have to bring a plate of them in to her and then try to convince her to try one before they get too cold to eat."

"You'd also likely have to keep others from stealing them if given half the chance. They are delicious."

Not him, though! Never him! Not at all! *innocence!*

"That they are. And very vulnerable to attack from above. Something that a particular shrewd consumer might want to be wary of."

"Very," nods the cat, sagely. "They would be in the most peril from that direction, yes."

He considers something for a moment, then tilts his head at the Doctor.

"How about... I help you keep a lookout for danger? Just in case. Four eyes are better than two, after all, and they are very delicious paradoxes," he purrs. "They'd absolutely be a temptation to any passing scavenger without a moral compass to keep him from giving in to temptation. I'd not be wanting any payment or anything for my help, not at all - I just like being... helpful."

"A cat who likes being helpful. Go on, pull the other one."

"Oh, I'm no more a cat than you are a human," he smirks.

It looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, but is not a duck.

"By which you mean you can do a passable impression, but you're far more, and therefore to be trusted even less."

Just carrying that analogy to its conclusion.

Yrael carries it a bit further, leaf-green eyes bright.

"By the same logic, the same applies to you, though it takes a great deal to be less worthy of trust than humans. Cats are honest, in comparison."

"Oh, I'd never deny that I'm not to be trusted. I do all kinds of naughty things. And cats are only honest insofar as they make no secret of their self-serving nature."

"Humans have made an art of that particular secret - they call it politics," says the not'cat, stepping off his branch and dropping lightly out of the tree.

As the white cat falls, his form grows ragged at the edges, white fur growing brighter until nothing can be seen at all in the brilliant white light, like a miniature white dwarf star falling lightly to the ground. With the light comes the smell, the acrid scent of Free Magic, of utter chaos, something like the smell of ozone after a nearby lightning strike and wholly wrong.

The light stretches up, until it is the size of a man, then begins to fade as quickly as it had come. It leaves a mostly-human-seeming Yrael in its wake, clad in white as bright as his stark white hair, as his bone-pale skin. The only color to him resides in his eyes, which are the same impossible green as the cat's eyes, each bisected by a vertical pupil of black.

"But, as I'm sure you know, it is boring to know only the trustworthy people."

"It's the trustworthy ones you have to watch closest, I've always found," the Doctor notes with a smirk.

"And who wants to have to do that all the time?" says the Bright Shiner, dry. "Waste of time, really."

"Precisely. Much more important things to do."

"Like entice friends out of one's ship to try the fried paradoxes and the Atlantean wine."

He chuckles.

"For a start, yeah."
