Recent improvements to his personality notwithstanding, Lily has learned to be just a little bit wary when Potter looks ... 'relaxed and content.'

If not quite as wary as it is necessary to be when he looks smug and pleased with himself.

"Having a good day, Potter?"

"Oh. It's been brilliant, Evans," says James with a grin.

He gestures to his shiny new badge.

"Join me, won't you?"

"Congratulations.

"Does this mean I'll be listening to Cliona complain about you next year?"

Lily takes the seat across from his.

"Thank you.

"And maybe," James allows, before adding (with a laugh), "though I hope not. I don't plan on becoming the next Quentin March. But I also really want Gryffindor to take the Cup. So ..."

... that may involve Quentin-like tactics on the occasion.

He shrugs innocently.

"D'you want anything to drink?"

"So I'll be listening to Cliona complain about you," Lily finishes for him, and smiles.

As far as Lily can tell, complaining about the captain is a requirement for being on the team. You don't have to really mean it, you just have to do it.

"Um, sure. I'll have a Tango. Thanks."

True enough.

Complaining about March never meant James disliked him or anything. It was just the thing to do.

Blimey.

He's going to have to look forward to that, isn't he?

"Right, a 'Tango' for Evans," says James to a passing waitrat he manages to flag down. "What's a 'Tango', exactly?"

"It's an orange-flavored soft drink.

"Not entirely unlike what you've got there, only, well, orange-flavored."

"Brilliant. I think I might try that next. It was Rachel, from here, who introduced me to this Coke drink," says James, gesturing to his glass. "And it's really good."

"You wouldn't have any trouble finding it in London, I wouldn't think."

Then again, Lily can't think of many things you couldn't find somewhere in London.

It's ... London.

True enough.

"I ought to look into it," he says, nodding and putting that on his mental to-do list. "Muggles are brilliant."

For one brief second, he'll get a very bright smile for that.

And then her face will take on a terribly serious expression.

"Look, I need to talk to you about something. And it's going to be weird.

"Really, really weird."

That rapid change in expression is almost scary.

So are her words.

James looks skeptical.

And a little worried.

"... right. Okay."

"And you can't tell anyone. At home.

"Anyone. Including Sirius Black."

Especially Sirius Black.

There are things Lily cannot handle, and Black's knowing is one of them.

"You have to promise."

"What's this about, Evans?"

Because it sounds really serious.

And - yeah. That's a little more than worrying.

Lily shakes her head.

"You have to promise," she says, again.

She can't tell him if he doesn't.

She just can't.

"All right," he says.

If only because his curiousity is burning a hole in his mind.

"I promise. I won't tell anyone, especially Sirius Black."
