Alyx only left the Borealis a little while ago for her R&R, as far as Gordon is concerned- he just ran into Shephard belowdecks. It's occurred to him that he has some work that needs doing himself, and that they don't necessarily have the supplies for on board the ship. Which is why there's now a heavily armed and armored scientist-
Oh, who are we kidding. Gordon hasn't done any actual science in longer than he can remember. It hurts, but it's true.
Anyway, he's got one of the tables set aside for maintenance on a few of his guns, including a Combine pulse rifle. And for work on his suit's helmet. He doesn't wear it often, but when he needs it he really needs it, so he'd like to make sure it does the whole airtight seal and air filtration/supply thing properly before they go into battle again.
