Trowa's visit to Quatre's home is about halfway through. It's been a good week. (And, thanks to spending several of Quatre's workdays hanging out at the local university, Trowa now has much more detailed mental notes on how to successfully pass as a college student. Yes, low-stakes infiltration practice is Trowa's idea of a vacation ( Read more... )

X follows him.

She may also be using this as an opportunity to practice passing unnoticed through a crowd.

Though she is careful to spend a moment or two in Trowa's peripheral vision first.

It is only considerate.

Trowa appreciates the courtesy.

Even if he shows no sign. (Nor any sign of seeing X at all. That's also only courtesy, right?)

At least, until they reach the gym.

X appreciates the reciprocal courtesy.

And once inside the gym, X flicks a quick glance between Trowa and the weights.

Call it a question.

Trowa's own glance slides over the mats, pauses for an instant on the single bar, and moves on to the tightrope.

Then: "I'm visiting Quatre."

So.

Workout space is -- not more limited, exactly, in the Winners' huge house, but less easily tailored to circus acrobatics than usual.

X merely nods before letting her own gaze flick across those same pieces of equipment.

He minds company? At least on the mats?

Nah. Why should he? (The visible portion of this is a slow blink, and the faintest of headshakes.)

He lifts the bundle of clothing slightly, though. He's going to seek out the changing rooms first. Jeans and a turtleneck are easy to move in, but not ideal for prolonged acrobatics.

X is wearing track pants and a tank top.

She is good.

Though she will, in a moment, crouch down to take off her boots.

And her socks.

Trowa doesn't take long. He's efficient. (And used to backstage changes.)

And likewise barefoot when he emerges.

Time to run a few laps around the gym to warm up, and then to stretch. X can follow along or do her own thing, as she likes.

X does not bother warming up.

Though she does drop into a few stretches. Some of them are the ones she learned from Rachel.

Not that it makes much difference. For her.

Yeah, well. Some of us lack a healing factor, and get to avoid pointless injury the old-fashioned way.

When it's easily possible, anyway.

He's not planning to push himself a lot, anyway, in terms of stretching. But you don't keep yourself in shape by easing off.

So. Warm ups!

After that, unless X has a better idea, he's going to move into a modified version of one of his older acrobatic acts. It's not one he does onstage any more, and back when he did it was with Cathy and, at the end, a lion. But it's adaptable to this space, and a good solo workout.

X watches him for a little while, head tilted as she follows his movements.

She is not much of one for katas. Or organized routines.

Except for what she has worked on with Rachel. If she strings some of those moves together --

Well. She gets some good tumbling passes out of it.

It's a job.

For the performance acts, anyway. Insofar as workouts go -- well, he adapts things on the fly as he feels like it, but drawing on old acts is a much more interesting way to get a workout than free weights or push-ups.

Speaking of adapting things on the fly: he steals a tumbling pass from X, moving the other direction across the mat.

(This is what conversation is, right?)

X responds by snagging several of his moves and dropping them into the middle of another pass.

Call it point-counterpoint?

Trowa doesn't smile.

But X is fun to hang out with.

He does, however, mimic her back with his own moves. (They wouldn't otherwise have come at this point in the routine, so it's valid.)

X enjoys Trowa's company as well.

That is why she repeats the same pass, only backwards.

(And not in heels.)

(Trowa intellectually understands many aspects of and reasons for the societal phenomenon of high heels, and why people choose to wear them in various situations. And, on a deeper level, totally fails to comprehend why the fashion exists.)

This conversation goes on a while longer before Trowa comes to a halt -- breathing harder than usual, because Trowa may be in excellent shape but he lacks a superhuman healing factor -- and flicks a glance at the tightrope.

Want to move there, or no? He's inclined to, anyway.
