The really tricky thing about cross-universal dating is not whether or not you both use base ten to count dates and times. It isn't that one of you is deadly allergic to the proteins in that romantic dinner. It isn't even that you're technically on opposite sides of the law, though it is lucky alternate universes don't have extradition treaties

Ako supports the use of chocolate in a number of situations.

To be honest, Ako just supports chocolate in general.

"Noodles please, Bar-san."

Sideways glance at Duo.

"Sorry," he says with a grin. "Didn't mean to hog all Bar's attention."

Sometimes, you just have a pressing question!

"That's all right," says Ako, "Just, um. Oh fish please, Bar-san."

Napkin interruptions, you know how it happens.

"Just what are you trying to work out?"

"Young love," Duo says, straight-faced. Then he chuckles and shakes his head. "Just wondering if another universe celebrated the same holiday, is all."

He can't say that he'd had any particular reason in mind when he stopped into Milliways; it was more of an impulse than anything else.

(Then again, it's also a good place to unwind after a long day and before a long evening to come without anyone in between trying to surreptitiously assess the state of your health, not that Gabriel's willing to admit that's part of the draw.)

He slants a considering glance toward the armchair by the fire, but decides to approach the bar first.

"Whiskey, neat, if you don't mind," he requests. "Xièxie nĭ."

He offers a cordial nod to the young man a little ways down the bar. He looks familiar, actually-- the hair's certainly distinctive...

... ah, that's it, he's a friend of Mary's.

"...they probably don't have physical newspapers, huh? Is it all feed based? It's not like she didn't know what a book was."

Duo seems to be conversing with the Bar. He's also got a few ads (from different universes and periodicals!) about flower sales. He has not yet noticed Gabriel.

He appears to be fairly deep into his not-exactly-one-sided conversation, or else it's something particularly important to him.

Gabriel takes a sip of his drink and observes with idle interest, until he can offer a proper polite greeting.

Duo sighs. "Well, I guess it's not like she's one for contemplation of the martyrs anyway. Might as well go for the chocolate, right?"

It's hard to tell whether or not the bar agrees.

Duo looks up. He does not freeze like a deer in the headlights, but it takes effort.

It's at some point after the other threads that the door opens and a familiar form wanders in.

In festive spirit for the holiday, she's wearing... green and yellow. Oh well.

Decision time, Duo!

(And it's not like he's wearing a flower in his buttonhole or anything.)

Well, no, but he might've had to shove his newspaper collection back into Bar or something.

River takes a second to catch the motion, or possibly just to parse it correctly; then she brightens with predictable immediacy, and obediently changes course.

Oh, the newspapers are long gone, by now. Now he may be hiding a box behind his back. Don't worry, it's not heart shaped.

"Hey." His smile might be a little sappy, though.

"Problems?" Quatre asks, leaning on the bar next to him not long after.

(No, he didn't walk that quietly, so Duo probably noticed him entering. Quatre's only been in the bar for long enough to join him, however.)

"Well, I did just tell River's dad that I'm dating her."

Duo only looks a little shellshocked.

"Well, you're alive!" is perhaps not the most encouraging statement Quatre could make. It's what slips out of his mouth, however, and the tone is pretty upbeat. "How did he take it?"

Duo stares at him. Quatre is so helpful.

"Okay, I guess. It's not like I do 'meet the parents' very often, man."
