The last thing Nynaeve was expecting this morning was to walk out of her -- all right, her bedroom -- and wander into Milliways ( Read more... )

"Likely you'll pull it all out if you keep doing that, lass," he warns, glancing up from the glass of rum in front of him.

"That's not bloody likely."

Nynaeve sniffs. Then scowls.

"Thank you for your concern."

Jack blinks at her insult, then grins, gold glinting from a tooth as he does.

"Got a temper there, don't you, luv?"

Her scowl deepens.

"You'll see less of it if you call me by name. Nynaeve. I am not your anything, least of all a 'love'."

He dips a short bow from the waist without rising from his seat, and grins even more cheerfully.

"Delighted to make your acquaintance, Nynaeve. The name's Sparrow."

A beat.

"Captain Jack Sparrow."

She presses her lips together tightly. It looks like her scowl isn't going anywhere.

"Light, the Sea Folk would have a fine day with you."

For a moment she'd almost like to see that. Almost.

"I know sea folk!" he exclaims. "Know a lot of sea folk, it happens."

He gives her a once-over.

"Not going to tell me you're a wen-- er, a lady what's got a fondness for sailors, are you?"

Her scowl gets darker.

Sparrow is lucky he bit back the wench comment as much as he did.

"I've been on a fair few boats in my time. And ships, too."

Her tone reveals she has little to no liking for it. At all.

Almost drowning will do that for a lady. Even if a wedding followed shortly after.

"... you know the difference," he observes, straightening in his seat. It's clear that Nynaeve's gotten his full attention, to judge from the speculative gleam in the black eyes.

"Hear a lot of claims, you do, but that's always a giveaway as to someone what knows something as opposed to those just blowing hot air."

"That's hardly limited to ships and seafaring folk."

Nynaeve sniffs again. At least she doesn't yank on her braid.

"Though I'm glad to see all that time training Windfinders was good for something."

Sarcasm?

Maybe a little.

The sharper she gets, the more comfortable he looks -- it's almost as though it's familiar to him, somehow.

"Training wind-finders?" Jack mulls that over. "Useful sort of trick, to know the wind, but I've never heard tell of a man what could find it when it went missing."

"Men generally can't," she snaps.

Then pauses.

"Couldn't. Light knows how it stands now."

She hasn't had the time to ask.

He eyes her a bit warily.

"You sure of that?"

One side of his moustache twitches, almost as though he's trying to hide a smile.

She glares.

"Why wouldn't I be?"

He holds up both hands, palms toward her, and grins openly-- even as he evades the question.

"No harm in asking, is there?"

She tilts her chin up.

"I'm sure I couldn't say."

Now she's just being stubborn.
