Jack's standing outside, huddled into his coat against the chill, but enjoying the silence after the noise of the bar and the full-on holiday cheer of his world.

Of course, being a California boy, he has no idea that the snow he's standing in is the perfect consistency for snowball-packing snow.

:D?

Beckett may have come to that conclusion a while ago, when she first stepped outside on her walk, but no one's been available (or appropriate) to wind up on the receiving end of the first official snowballs of winter.

She may call out before launching one in his direction, but she doesn't throw it hard, and her aim isn't perfected yet - if anything, it'll barely wing the sleeve of his coat.

Jack had been aware of the footsteps behind hi, but he still startles at the sound of her calling to him just before something brushes the sleeve of his coat.

Spinning around, he just catches the puff of snow as the snowball lands in a drift, quickly adding it up with the expression on Beckett's face.

"You sure you want to go there?" Jack asks with a slightly bemused look on his face.

"That wasn't even my best," she declares, already bending over to start packing snow in between her palms and attempting to hide a grin while doing so.

She only succeeds at one of those.

Care to take a guess as to which?

(The snowball currently being lobbed at Jack may answer the question for him.)

Jack ducks her snowball, bending to scoop up a handful of snow.

"I'd hope it wasn't, otherwise your best is pretty pathetic," Jack says, pressing the snow in his hands together once, then throwing. The snowball disintegrates in mid-air.

Beckett nearly snorts with laughter.

"Didn't anyone ever teach you how to pack a snowball, Bauer?" she asks, with a corresponding tilt of her head. "Oh, that's right - you're a California boy."

She sidesteps a little, scooping up more snow as she goes.

"Why don't you come a little closer and show me how, then?" Jack asks.

At least close enough that she's his snowball won't fall apart before it hits her.

"Right now, I trust you about as far as I can throw you. Which isn't as far as I can throw this," she says, trying to anticipate where he'll move to and throwing the snowball slightly down and to the left.

This time she gets him, the snowball hitting him low in the chest. However, that's partly because Jack's also been watching her hands to see how she makes a snowball.

"Yeah, and I could probably throw you a lot farther. Like say headfirst into that snowdrift over there."

He scoops up another handful of snow, this time pressing and turning it a couple times before throwing. It still falls apart, but it gets a lot closer to her than the last one.

"Not giving up already, are you?" she asks, grinning as her snowball makes solid contact.

His comment earns him a look.

"That's playing dirty, Jack. I expected more from you."

"If so, then you don't know me very well, do you?" Jack asks.

He's often played dirty if it meant winning in the end. Of course in those cases there was usually more at stake than a snowball fight.

Scooping up another handful of snow, he packs it, then lobs it at her.

She slips in an attempt to avoid the snowball and laughs at her own clumsiness, managing to regain her balance before she completely falls on her ass.

Quickly, she scoops up enough to make another snowball, but her next throw is weak. She's laughing too hard.

"Just what's so funny that you're losing your focus, Beckett?" Jack asks, preparing another snowball.

"Just the fact that you are way too serious about this right now," she says, scrambling to take cover behind the nearest tree.

From here, she can ready a few sources of snow ammo.

"News flash for you; I'm just a little competitive," Jack says, his tone wry.

This time when he lets a snowball fly, it hits the tree she's hiding behind. Of course that's mainly because Jack's approached her while talking so he didn't really have to throw it that far.

"Gee, you think?"

She can hear his voice coming a little louder now, which means he's closer, but she has to chance choosing which direction he'll take around the tree before throwing her next snowball.

Only time will tell if she chose right.

Jack was about to go around the tree in one direaction when he saw Beckett getting ready to throw another snowball at him; at the last second, he ducks in the opposite direction and throws a snowball at her.

Now that he's getting better at making snowballs, his instincts have started to kick in.
