[OOM: To find the snitch...]

Angelina enters the bar wearing quidditch robes with the Hogwarts crest emblazoned on the back and playing with a small golden Snitch. She's rather surprised to find that her living room has become Milliways and she fumbles the snitch which takes the opportunity to escape from her and fly off to the bar.

"Bugger!" she ( Read more... )

Luke's settled at a table by the bar this evening, resolutely studying some old mythologies in his quest to figure out which gods will be the hardest to face in the coming war.

Until he notices the golden ball.

He can't help it; his demigod instincts kick in and make him aware of every single twist and turn it takes. Finally, driven to distraction, he lunges for it and manages to snatch it right out of the air.

Then he glances sheepishly at the woman at the bar. "Sorry, is this yours?"

"Technically, no," she says. "It belongs to the school I work at. But since it's my part of my job to look after it then yeah I guess it is.

Was it bothering you?"

"What kind of school uses balls like this?" he asks curiously, keeping a death grip on the frantically straining ball.

"And yeah, it kind of was. Don't worry about it, I'm just kind of distracted tonight." He flashes her a reassuring grin.

"The best school in the world," she says, grinning. "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Should I take that?" she asks, indicating the snitch.

"I don't think I can hold onto it for much longer," he says while pulling a comical grimace.

"Witchcraft and wizardry, you say?" He finds himself remembering a conversation he had a few days ago. "Would that school happen to be a seven year school?"

She rolls her eyes at the joke.

"Well if you want me to turn it off just let me know."

She nods.

"That's right. Heard of it have you?"

He just smiles. "Nah, I'm good." He lets it go, and watches it flutter around the bar for a few moments before turning back to the conversation. It's still an irritant at the edge of his awareness, but he's able to push it to the back of his mind for now.

"I've met some people who graduated from it. Sounds like an interesting place."

"Well it's never boring, that's for sure," she agrees. "There's always something going on."

"All that magic." It makes Luke shudder a little inside; magic in his world is a terryfying thing, the realm of a dark and distrusted goddess.

"What's your job, then? Besides chasing after misbehaving balls."

"I teach flying and run the Quidditch tournaments. It's only a part-time job, but it's a good one. The rest of the time I work for the MLE - that's Magical Law Enforcement -" she clarifies, " on the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad."

Luke whistles. "Quidditch? Sounds interesting. We had pretty boring sports at my school."

In Luke's opinion, if you've seen one chariot race, you've seen them all.

"Law Enforcement, huh? What kind of criminals do you get, with wizards?"

He's thinking of the dark, ancient magic Teddy mentioned.

"Well the biggest criminals I ever deal with are kids messing about with their parents wands," she says with a laugh.

"The floor above is the ones that work with the real criminals. I guess we get the same sort of criminals as normal police though. Thieves, occasionally murderers... that kind of thing. Aurors deal with the really serious stuff."

"Sounds like an easy job then." He smiles to take the sting out. "Of course, kids with magical powers must be pretty terrifying on their own."

It sure can be in his world.

"Aurors? Are there more of those than the MLE?"

"Not easy at all," she says shaking her head. "Improperly done enchantments and spells can be some of the worst to try and undo. Give a kid a wand they don't know how to use and some of the things I've seen them do will give you nightmares for months," she says with a small laugh.

"Well Aurors are part of the MLE - they're just a small part. They tend to deal with the dark magics rather than ordinary crimes. Like..." she casts around for a something similar in Muggle parlance, "Like um... is it the FDI that deal with really serious stuff?"
