First Entrance (Sort of)

Rosalie Hale opens the door to the bar, a little hesitantly for someone as sure of herself as Rosalie is. She steps in, glances around, and shuts the door behind her ( Read more... )

Bella's hanging out in Bar, parked at a table with a book (The Time Traveler's Wife, because it's summer and therefore she's departing from her usual classical/Victorian romance in favor of something more current.)

She glances up and notices Rosalie, and then spends the next minute or two fidgeting and trying to figure out if she ought to say hello or not.

Rosalie's ears pick up on the subtle noises of fidgeting, and she glances sideways enough to notice Bella out of the corner of her eye.

And then she finds herself debating as well.

She sighs a little and turns her head in the other direction. She focuses on trying not to crack the porcelain mug between her hands. She really should say something. She doesn't want to, but she knows she should.

She hasn't yet, though.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwkward!

Bella turns her attention back to her book. Or tries to, anyway, because she can't help thinking that she really should try to develop at least a speaking-terms relationship with Edward's other sister at some point in her life.

And some point really should start sooner than later, since she's fairly sure it's going to take some trying.

"Hi, Rosalie," she ventures quietly after a few minutes of this sort of inner debate.

Rosalie turns and raises one eyebrow slightly. She stares at Bella silently for a moment, letting the pause last longer than she needs to.

"Hi," she returns finally. She doesn't snap, but there is a definite icy edge to her tone.

At the moment, Rosalie's not pondering her reasons for her aversion to this girl. If she was, she'd be forced to grudgingly admit to herself once again that her reasons are a bit childish, and certainly not the result anything Bella has actually done wrong. But if she doesn't think about it, she doesn't have to admit that. For now, she's simply letting herself feel irritated.

Well, that... went about as well as it possibly could, Bella thinks.

"I um, I don't see you in here much."

Lamest. Followup. Ever.

But given that they don't really talk ever, Bella doesn't have a lot to go on.

"I haven't come here much," Rosalie replies flippantly, implying that it's obvious. Her tone comes out harsher than she means for it to, and she sighs a little.

Her tone is softer but still slightly frustrated when she admits, "I was thinking of coming here more often."

Rosalie glances sideways at Bella. She can't help wondering if Bella is disappointed to hear that.

"You should," Bella tries a tiny, hesitant smile. "It's... weirdly safe."

In her case, that's because any grievous injuries could probably be fixed more easily here than back home. But she figures it's a lot better for vampires in general, what with not having to hide what they are all the time.

Rosalie raises an eyebrow, thinking that's an odd thing to say about a place like this.

"I take it, then, that you've run into a lot less trouble here than you do in Forks?" She's careful not to smile when she says it. She doesn't want to give Bella the impression that she's warming up to her or something.

Because she's not...

"It'd be hard to get into more trouble," Bella admits.

"But yeah, people tend to be nice here, and they generally mind their own business."

"That does sound nice," Rosalie replies, coldly putting a slight emphasis on the word "that." She doesn't necessarily mean to say that Bella in particular should mind her own business; Rosalie just prefers to be left alone in general.

"Right."

Bella can take a hint. Sort of.

"I guess I'll let you get back to..." Not talking to people? Bella lets the sentence trail off vaguely and tries to pay attention to her book again.

Was that meant to be sarcastic? (Rosalie's inclined to think the worst of Bella, even if she has absolutely no basis for thinking so.)

It's just that when Bella turns away, Rosalie can't help noticing how quiet it gets. She's not really doing anything... In fact, it seems like she has absolutely no reason to be here.

After a few seconds of semi-awkward silence, Rosalie lets out a frustrated sigh and gets up to make her way towards the door. Let Bella think what she will.

[OOC: Wow, that went well, lol. I expected this thread to be longer, but Rosalie had different plans... Wrap here or tag back once? It's up to you. ^_^ We'll have to thread again sometime!]

Bella doesn't mean to chase Rosalie off, but she does let out a tiny sigh of suppressed tension when she goes.

That had been reasonably civil. Bella wondered if there was any actual way of getting on Rosalie's good side. Maybe she'd track down Emmett and ask - he seemed easygoing enough that she wouldn't fear to approach him, though she did rather fear getting some answers that ventured into the realm of too-much-info.

Still, it could have gone a lot worse, Bella thinks as she finally gets back into the paragraph she's re-read at least three times over.

[ooc: yes we should definitely have them talk for real one day!]
