Why is Miharu near a kitchen voluntarily? Who knows... But the fact is, he is not just near one, he is in one.
Likely it's an attempt to get out of eating later by being able to truthfully claim he ate something now, no matter how big or small it is. He's generally okay with food these days but he doesn't like being forcefed. It's not just simply annoying, it makes him sick. Literally.
He expected food in the kitchen. He did not, however, expect Mia. It is time to cue one 'eep' from this teenage boy. He may or may not have been lectured... and with that, Miharu has no particular idea of what to do around this woman. Let alone his own emotional fallbacks upon any memory of the silly things he told her. Yes, silly. We will go with 'silly'. It's simply easier that way.
Alas that backing away slowly and running is not a good option. It would actually be quite effective.
It's Cepheus who ends up noticing Miharu first and he gets full-on baby stare. Mia thought this was a sign that Cepheus didn't like the carrots at first but follows the child's gaze until she spots Miharu.
"Oh, hello Miharu. Did you come here looking for some supper?"
That was lovely. Miharu wasn't going to be rude and deny it, but there was no possible way he could swallow an entire bowl. But Mia was a good person and Important to his Important, so he would manage his best, the same as he did at home.
As long as he tries, Mia won't have any complaints. She's not the sort to force-feed. Though she will guilt you plenty into eating until you're full.
Mia grabs a bowl, puts a biscuit in it, and pours a ladleful of the ready stew on top.
"One of my cookbooks suggests this when the family's in the mood for pot pie and there's no time for making lots of individual pies. This is the inside out version."
She was quite surprised by the ease of making the biscuits. It was the first time she tried canned explody-dough. Fortunately, she got the biscuits in the oven before retrieving Cepheus from his nap.
"I do worry. It's something that develops out of maternal intuition, I think."
Just watch, one day Mia will offer hot plates of dinner and warm knitted sweaters to all the young men she encounters instead of handshakes. It'll save her the trouble of telling them they'll catch their death out in the cold and asking when was the last time they ate.
"Do I?" she asks. "You must be lucky to have so many people caring for you, then."
The tug of war with Cepheus has continued until she accidentally pulls the toy octopus out of the baby's grasp. He immediately starts to fuss and reach for the toy.
"Oh, sorry, sweetie," she says, giving the octopus back.

Just as long as the people don't, too...

She smiles and then playfully tugs at the arms of Cepheus's octopus doll. He holds fast to it and a friendly game of tug of war has started.
"Tell me if you like it."

...
Right, she probably meant the taste, not the inside-outness.

"Try some."
Beat.
"You don't have to eat it all, but I'd like you to try a spoonful. Make sure it's cooked right and all."

"You were tipped off, weren't you?"
It happens.

It only takes a moment of hesitation before trying it, too! No matter what he is to eat, that is a vast improvement.

"Besides, it's my job to take care of people."

A few someones, I suppose."
It was funny how many motherly figures one could collect and still not have their own mother.
