The weather is beginning to cool in District Twelve. Katniss is thinking about clothes - not the things Cinna dressed her in in the Capitol, but real clothes with thick heavy fabric that will keep her, her sister, and her mother warm this winter. This is the first year that they can afford all new things if they want. They won't have to trade for secondhand clothes or patch up and let out clothing from the year before. Prim is twelve and liable to hit a growth spurt any time now, and the thought of being able to buy her anything new that she wants when she outgrows the old draws a quiet, rare smile from Katniss.

When she was twelve - only four years ago, but it may as well be a lifetime - clothes were the last thing on her mind. She was more interested in keeping her family alive and fed after her father's death. She thinks maybe the one good thing about the Games is that Prim will never have to worry about that. Katniss would willingly go through a lot worse to be able to give her sister the better life her family has now.

She's still smiling a little as she opens the door to the old house that only she spends any time in anymore, but the smile disappears in an instant as she realizes that the familiar old home isn't behind it. She moves by instinct, reaching back for an arrow to put in her bow, before she remembers that bow and quiver are in their usual hiding place. She can't afford to have them found by the wrong person, to be branded as an illegal hunter. Not even a victor can get away with that.

Haymitch always has a knife, though, which is more easily explained away, and as Katniss looks around the space where her former home should be and at the people in it, she wishes she carried one, too.
