Cal had intended to try and come up with something different the next time Bar asked him to bartend, but, after the last happy hour he visited, he's feeling a little stubborn

That would not be a wicked smile on Ianto's face when he sits at the bar.

Never in a million years.

"Coffee, please," he says. "Black."

Cal would never dream of accusing Ianto of such a thing.

He also knows better than to serve Ianto from the pot he already has brewed, and so sets about starting a fresh one, saying,

"Hi, Ianto. How've you been?"

The fresh pot gets a nod of approval. "Not bad, I suppose.

"Did you have a good time at the after-prom thing?"

"Yeah," he says. "It was fun." He even had a conversation with X that was a lot more like the ones they used to have, except for Cal being more careful. Trying not to assume things, or jump in before X might have finished outlining her thoughts.

"Did you ever find Jane Austen?"

"I did. We had a very nice waltz together." He pauses. "I suspect she finds me amusing, though. Though I am just trying to be polite."

"I have no idea why anyone would find you amusing."

Cal is completely solemn as he says this, except for the "completely solemn" part.

"Oh," Ianto deadpans, "I'm hilarious."

"You sure make me laugh," Cal says brightly, turning to get a mug out of the cupboard.

Ianto smiles at that. "Thanks," he says simply. "That's a nice thing to hear."

. . . well, now Cal doesn't have the heart to go for the punchline, which was something along the lines of, In fact, just looking at you is enough to make anyone laugh.

Sure, it's bad, but bad jokes are a specialty. Not everyone can pull them off.

"Any time," he says instead, lightly. There's enough coffee in the pot for a mug, so he fills it and places it in front of Ianto.

"There you go."

...Ianto's sarcasm meter must be busted today.

"Thanks," he says has an experiment sip. It also gets a nod of approval.

Everyone has an off day now and then.

"No problem," he says. "Anything else with that?"

"Something sweet? Maybe a big chocolate-chip muffin?"

"Okay, I'll see what there is."

Cal hadn't seen much by way of pastries up front, but a look out back in the kitchen turns up a good-sized muffin - well, actually, he secures two of them, but Ianto only gets one. Cal will be keeping the other.

"There you go," he says again.

"You are a prince among men," says Ianto as he unwraps the muffin.

"Well, yeah," Cal says with a laugh, pulling the top off his own muffin.

"Anything exciting happening back home?" You know, that Cal missed the first time around?
